Newcastle Restaurant Week: Where to Enjoy Cosy Winter Dining

Looking for a cosy spot to enjoy some winter Restaurant Week dining?

Last updated:

NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week returns from 12th to 18th January and with winter in full swing, what better time to enjoy a meal in one of the city’s cosiest spots?

With venues offering homey and welcoming vibes – alongside hearty, wholesome dishes and cuisines bound to whisk you away to warmer climes – here’s our round-up of Newcastle Restaurant Week’s cosiest venues for winter dining this January.

DOOD, Quayside

Settle into the sumptuously cosy surrounds of DOOD for a mouth-watering meal that’ll whisk you away to the warmer climes of the Middle East this January Restaurant Week. For just £25, you’ll enjoy hummus and pita to share followed by a choice of mazeh (think falafel and blistered padron peppers with labneh) and hearty mains like succulent chicken kebab and smoky ash-roasted vegetables – all served with sides options including Persian jewelled rice and Aleppo chips.

City Tavern City Tavern

City Tavern, Northumberland Road

Boasting cosy pub vibes aplenty, City Tavern is a Newcastle favourite known for its delicious home-cooked and wholesome food. This Restaurant Week, get two courses for £20 or three for £25 and choose from dishes like confit duck leg pastilla, sea bream served with crushed potatoes, broccoli and brown shrimp butter and the indulgent pear and ginger upside down cake with vanilla custard.

The Broad Chare, Broad Chare

Looking for somewhere to enjoy a cosy Restaurant Week lunch? Look no further than The Broad Chare. Warm and welcoming, the pub offers all the comforts of a traditional alehouse but with a Michelin Guide-recommended menu of local, seasonal and home-cooked food. Their January Restaurant Week deal offers two courses for £20 or three for £25 at lunchtime (12pm-2:30pm) on weekdays with dishes like spiced carrot and brown crab soup, roast cauliflower with curried lentils and Yorkshire rhubarb sponge with vanilla custard.

The French Quarter The French Quarter

The French Quarter, Westgate Road

Snuggled in an old railway arch on Westgate Road, The French Quarter is everything you need for a spot of cosy Restaurant Week dining – an intimate space, laidback vibes and a delicious menu of fine yet unfussy French cuisine. Enjoy two courses for £20 or three for £25 with starters like smoked mackerel pâté, hearty mains including chicken supreme with sauteed potatoes and creamy tarragon sauce and indulgent desserts like delice de chocolat.

Babucho, Side

Bringing New York-Italian brasserie vibes to Newcastle, Restaurant Week regular Babucho is serving up a £20 and £25 menu brimming with comfort classics perfect for a cosy meal this January. Start with the cockle-warming ribolita Tuscan soup before progressing on to hearty mains like chicken and chorizo carbonara. And, with desserts like banoffee cheesecake and Amarena cherry panna cotta, why not treat yourself to something sweet too?

Blackfriars Blackfriars

Blackfriars, Friars’ Street

Historical and homely, Blackfriars is one of Newcastle’s most beloved restaurants and boasts a unique setting – a former 13th century Dominican friary – to boot. Book a table in one of its many cosy corners to enjoy a duo of £25 Restaurant Week deals – three courses at lunch or two at dinner – and dishes typical of its traditional yet gutsy British cuisine including pork and black pudding terrine, pan-fried North Shields cod and baked vanilla and rhubarb cheesecake.

Kaltur, High Bridge

Nestled on the cobblestones of High Bridge you’ll find a Kaltur, a cosy little spot serving sun-filled Spanish tapas that’s bound to blow those January blues away. With a trio of offers priced at £15, £20 and £25, Restaurant Week is the chance to enjoy a taste of the Mediterranean this winter with classic dishes like Padron peppers, Iberico ham croquettes and grilled Galician octopus.

St. Vincent St. Vincent

St. Vincent, Broad Chare

Specialising in what they call “seasonal plates of Franco-Italian inspired pleasures”, St. Vincent is the place to head this Restaurant Week for a cosy meal of mouth-watering Mediterranean eats. Their two courses for £20 and three for £25 menu features plenty to delight but we’re particularly tempted by the winter minestrone starter, pappardelle with wagyu ragu main and Seville orange and chocolate tart to finish.

Hibou Blanc, High Bridge

With its ambient chandelier lighting, comfy leather banquettes and upmarket vibes, Hibou Blanc is an ideal spot for cosy winter dining – especially if you’re looking for a Restaurant Week date night destination. Treat your beloved to starters like smoked salmon pastrami, mains including slow-cooked porchetta with honey glazed carrots and sweetheart cabbage and desserts like spiced Comice pear with their two courses for £20 or three for £25 deal.

January can be a long and dreary month but NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week is the perfect excuse to get out and about in the city centre without breaking the post-Christmas budget. And, with so many cosy spots to head to, why not venture out and enjoy the Toon’s dining scene this winter?
