NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week: Where to Eat Great Veggie & Vegan Food

NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week is just around the corner, but don't be fooled into thinking that it's just for the meat eaters!

In fact, there are lots of great restaurants offering tasty vegan and vegetarian fare throughout the week.

From tapas and Italian eats to Asian and Caribbean cuisine, check out where people of the plant-based persuasion should head when NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week returns this January.

Turtle Bay, Newgate Street

Be whisked away to warmer climes at Turtle Bay with their £20 Restaurant Week deal offering a small plate, big plate and a side. There are lots of veggie and vegan Caribbean delights to choose from with Trini doubles and charred corn rib starters, curry chickpea and whole eggplant mains and sides like sweet potato fries and callaloo with spinach.

Fat Hippo, Shakespeare Street

A burger joint might not be the first place you’d think to head for veggie and vegan eats during Restaurant Week but Fat Hippo’s vegan menu is bound to have you drooling. For just £15, you can pick a starter - frickles or trash browns - and choose from two vegan-friendly burgers, the Harlem Fake and the Five Lies. The deal includes a side as well - fries, hand-cut chips or purple 'slaw - and they're all suitable for veggies and vegans too!

Super Natural has been cooking up delicious vegan and vegetarian food in Newcastle since 1976 so rest assured you’re in for a fantastic plant-based feast there during Restaurant Week. Each and every dish on their Restaurant Week menu is suitable for both vegetarians and vegans and there’s plenty of tasty fare with their main and dessert for £15 offer – from burger, gyros and lasagne mains to sticky toffee pudding and key lime pie for dessert. They've got plenty of tasty food for gluten-free Restaurant Week diners too!

Umai Mi, Grey’s Quarter @ Eldon Square

Umai Mi have a fantastic two courses for £15 or three for £20 deal running during Restaurant Week with plenty of tasty fare to tempt vegans and vegetarians. Choose from small eats like Vietnamese spring rolls, big eats including tofu, mushrooms and bamboo shoots served on jasmine rice and desserts like Thai caremelised bananas.

One for lovers of fusion flavours, Cilantro serves up Indo-Latino tapas dishes and their £25 Restaurant Week offer - offering three tapas dishes and a choice or rice or naan - is bound to tempt veggie and vegans. Choose from dishes like spicy okra fries, chickpea and potato taco and Cilantro's special salad or go old-school with tapas portions of classic curries like bhuna, korma and madras - they're all available with veggie and vegan-friendly options.

Cafe Andaluz, Grey Street

Grey Street institution Cafe Andaluz is one of the Toon's top tapas destinations and they've got plenty to delight veggie and vegan diners this Restaurant Week. Their £15 and £20 offers get guests three tapas at lunch or three tapas and dessert at dinner with treats like Padrón peppers, pan Catalan and vegan fruit sorbet to feast on.

Zizzi, Grey Street

Italian restaurant Zizzi is dishing up two courses for £15 or three for £20 this Restaurant Week and their menu boasts lots of vegan and vegetarian dishes. Kick off your meal with a classic bruschetta or olive bowl, followed by mains of pomodoro pasta or a hearty lentil ragu. Why not treat yourself to some sorbet or their fudge cake for dessert? They're both veggie and vegan-friendly!

Sunshine Restaurant, Gallowgate

Specialising in Eritrean cuisine, Sunshine Restaurant has a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes up for grabs and a great deal offering a starter, main and side for just £15. Dine on dishes like vegetarian samosas or salads to start, sides including rice and bread and don’t miss out on the beyanetu – a platter of vegan curries and vegetables served with enjera bread – for your main.

Dakwala Dakwala

Dakwala, Grainger Street

For veggies and vegans hoping to spice it up a bit this January, Dakwala has a duo of Restaurant Week deals that'll do the job nicely. Tuck into three small plates and a side at lunch for £15 and enjoy the likes of onion-beet bhaji, vada pav, sweet chilli cauliflower and gunpowder fries or go for their three-course £20 option and whet your appetitie with Bombay chowpatty bhel on arrival, a small plate and a vegetable karahi canteen curry with pulao rice to follow.

El Torero, Side

Tasty tapas and a variety of veggie and vegan options await at El Torerowith their £15 Restaurant Week deal. Get three tapas for £15 and feast on authentic Spanish fare like champiñones al vino blanco (mushrooms sauteed with garlic, parsley and dry white wine), padrón peppers and potage de titos (chickpeas cooked with vegetables, cumin and spices),

There’s no lack of delicious vegan and vegetarian food to try during NE1 Newcastle Restaurant Week and with fantastic £15, £20 and £25 deals, it won’t break the bank either! The only question left is – where are you booking a table at?
