Whether you fancy soaking up the Newcastle sun, or you’re looking for the perfect people watching spot this Restaurant Week, there’s plenty of top-notch restaurants for some al fresco feasts.
So whatever you’re in the mood for, from innovative dishes to comforting classics, these venues have a table with your name on it this August Restaurant Week.
Roof Thirty Nine, Fenwick
This summer, Fentimans and Fuego are bringing the Mediterranean vibes to Fenwick with Roof Thirty Nine. It’s an ideal spot for anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Northumberland Street, and their Restaurant Week offer makes it even more appealing, with a large main and dessert available for only £15. We’d suggest exploring that extra-special cocktail menu while you’re there too, all curated by Joe Schofield and using Fentimans Sicillian lemonade… we’ll cheers to that!
Chaophraya, Grey’s Quarter, Eldon Square
As well as specialising in both classic and reimagined Thai dishes, Chaophraya in Eldon Square also offers unparalleled views over the heart of Newcastle city centre from their rooftop terrace. Watching the world go by whilst dining on two courses for £20 or three for £25? Sounds dreamy to us – we’ll take some sweetcorn cakes and Thai basil stir fry!
Blackfriars, Friars Street
Set within a thirteenth-century former Dominican friary, a trip to Blackfriars is always impressive – but this Restaurant Week, we’re suggesting that you grab a table outside in their gorgeous cloister garden. Complete with heated parasols, fire pits and ambient festoon lighting, you can enjoy three courses at lunch or two at dinner for just £25 there this August Restaurant Week.
Kafeneon, Bigg Market
With its delicious Greek menu (spetsofai, cajun chicken souvlaki and baklava are all on the menu!), Kafeneon is tasty at the best of times, but there’s something about enjoying a meal outside in their gorgeous pavement café that makes it taste even better. And this Restaurant Week, there’s two courses for £15 or three for £20 to enjoy whilst you soak up the sun.
Barluga, Grey Street
You’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re not even in Newcastle with a trip to Barluga’s hidden rooftop terrace! We’ll always suggest heading there for a post-work pint in the sun, or weekend cocktail with your pals, but it’s even tastier this August, with two courses for £20 or three for £25. That strawberries and cream cheesecake and some sun? Yes please!
The Broad Chare, Broad Chare
An oasis of calm hidden away on Newcastle’s Quayside, The Broad Chare’s garden offers plenty of rustic green space and large, welcoming parasols for anyone needing a spot of shade in this sun trap. It’s easy enough to while away the hours here, but even more so when there’s two courses for £20 and three for £25 to enjoy as well.
Gino D’Acampo, Newcastle Quayside
Also based on Newcastle’s Quayside, Gino D’Acampo is home to a huge contemporary terrace overlooking the iconic River Tyne. Take a few hours out of your day to luxuriate here, and enjoy some real Italian food with two courses for £20 or three for £25, and everything from caprese and Caesar salad to cheesecake on the menu!
Sandhill Arms, Sandhill
Offering proper good pub grub (and Wylam Brewery beers!), Sandhill Arms is an ideal spot for anyone after classic, comforting dishes this August Restaurant Week. Bring your pal and take a seat outside in their pavement café to enjoy two pie meals each and a side to share for just £25. And yes, steak and ale pie is obviously on the menu!
Victors, Newcastle Quayside
Newcastle knows more than anywhere that the British weather is unpredictable – even in summer! – so if the sun’s not on our side this August Restaurant Week, then Victors Newcastle has you covered. Their Wisteria Terrace boasts a retractable roof terrace and heaters, so you can enjoy all the views of the great outdoors, whatever the weather! And with two courses for £20 or three for £25 to dine on while you’re there, what’s not to love?
Hotel du Vin, City Road
Just a stones throw from the Millenium Bridge, you’ll find Hotel du Vin and their gorgeous Bistro. Year round, they offer classical French dishes in a relaxed setting, but it all tastes even better in al fresco season, with their delightful outdoors space. This Restaurant Week, there’s two courses for £20 or three for £25 on offer, so you could be dining on the likes of saumon fumé and poussin basquaise before you know it.
Some might say it’s grim up north, but when the sun shines here – well, we think it might just be the best place in the world. And it’s even better with some good company, and some good food, so pack some sunnies (and a bottle of factor 50!) to dine al fresco woth Newcastle Restaurant Week this August.
