The 10 Best Al Fresco Lunch Spots in Newcastle

Fancy dining out? Here’s our top picks for al fresco lunchtime dining in Newcastle

Last updated:

With the weather getting warmer, there’s never been a better time to treat yourself to a delicious lunch out in the sunshine.

So whether you’re trying a new cuisine, or visiting an old favourite, head to these venues to get a taste of some of the best al fresco dining Newcastle has to offer!

Barluga, Grey Street

Independent local bar and restaurant Barluga (pictured above) is just a stones throw from Monument, making it an ideal spot if you’re travelling through the city centre. Enjoy their gastro-pub style menu outside on their sunny terrace, with plenty of crowd-pleasing a la carte dishes, or a set menu with two courses for £23 or three for £28 that’s available from 12pm Monday to Friday.

Gusto, Newcastle Quayside

Take in the sights and sounds of the Quayside by grabbing a seat at Gusto’s impressive outdoor terrace. This atmospheric spot is guaranteed to get busy when the weather’s nice, and we’re hardly surprised, since they offer a deliciously authentic Italian lunch menu

Zapatista, Grainger Street

Maestros of Mexican dining Zapatista are already beloved across the city for their authentic burritos, nachos and tacos – so the next time you visit their Grainger Street venue, why not take a seat outside? Watch the world go by while you feast on some jalapeno poppers and a quesadilla, and maybe add some churros to keep that sweet tooth satisfied.

Rudy's Rudy's

Rudy’s, Grey Street

Also bringing a taste of Italy to Toon is Rudy’s, where you’ll find true Neapolitan pizza dished up each and every day. Their outdoors dining space is perfect for soaking up the sun on Grey Street – transporting diners to a world of delicious food and gorgeous weather that’ll almost have you believing that you’re dining in the heart of Naples itself…

Pitcher & Piano, Newcastle Quayside

Pitcher & Piano is all about good food and great times, which their fantastic outdoor dining area certainly helps with. You’ll be right by the Quayside – making it perfect for a spot of people watching! – and there’s a lunch deal to take advantage of too, with selected dishes available for just £9.75 from Monday to Friday.

Kafeneon, Bigg Market

Arguably one of the most iconic outdoor dining areas in the Toon, Kafeneon’s terrace has returned along with the warmer weather, and we couldn’t be happier! Soak up the sun in the heart of the city centre, and dine on everything from chicken gyros to pita toasties. Plus, their happy hour menu is on offer from Sunday to Friday (11am-7pm), and includes two courses for just £15.95.

The Broad Chare The Broad Chare

The Broad Chare, Broad Chare

It’s pretty hard to beat a good beer garden, and The Broad Chare’s hidden oasis is definitely one of the best in town. Grab a seat under one of the colourful parasols to dig into their impressive menu, including everything from indulgent meals like dry aged dexter ribeye and chalk stream trout, to lighter bar food options. Scotch egg, anyone?

Olive & Bean, Clayton Street

Handmade brunches and lunches are Olive & Bean’s speciality – but their wide variety of sweet treats has certainly gained the Clayton Street staple a delicious reputation too! Next time you’re passing by, grab an outdoors table to get the best of both worlds between the hustle and bustle of the café and the city centre.

Old George Inn, Old George Yard

If you enjoy a slice of history with your meal, then head to the Old George Inn, near High Bridge. It’s Newcastle’s oldest pub – dating back to 1582 – and boasts an atmospheric outdoors yard to dine in. And as if that wasn’t enough, you can even grab one of their tasty lunch dishes and a refreshing drink from just £7 from Monday to Friday (12pm-4pm).

Victors Victors

Victors, Newcastle Quayside

And last but by no means least, there’s Victors on the Quayside. We’d be remiss not to mention this gorgeous venue, with its wisteria-woven interiors and stunning terrace that’s perfect for lunchtime dining. It’s fully-covered and heated too – just in case the weather isn’t on-board with your plans!

Brighten up lunchtimes and get some sunshine with one of these al freso lunch spots. There’s sure to be a place for you, whatever food you fancy!
