VE Day Danish Memorial Service: Newcastle Cathedral

Newcastle Cathedral is commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a unique service honoring Danish merchant seamen - known as the "war sailors" - whose international memorial resides in the Cathedral.

Following Germany's occupation of Denmark in 1940, over 6000 Danish sailors supported the Allies with Newcastle becoming their "home port." Sadly, many lost their lives and each year Newcastle Cathedral holds a service remembering them and their bravery.

This year's service begins with words from Mr Karsten Møller Hansen - the Danish pastor of the Danish church in London - and will be followed by the laying of wreaths at the memorial.
