Meet the Grainger Market Traders: Northern Optical Company

Get to know the eyecare company that has called Newcastle’s Grainger Market home for over a century

Last updated:

Founded way back in 1894, Northern Optical Company is one of the oldest optometrists in the North East and has called Newcastle’s Grainger Market home for over 130 years.

We caught up with the team behind the family-run business to find out more about the eyecare services they offer, the secret behind their long-running success and what they love most about being a part of the Grainger Market community.

Northern Optical Co has been in business for over a century – what’s the secret to your success?

As third-generation family opticians, we genuinely care about every patient who walks through our doors. We take pride in the little details and making sure everyone feels comfortable, looked after, and listened to.

Many of our patients have been coming to us since they were children and are still with us now, bringing the next generations with them at each visit. It means the world to us to have built so many relationships that last a lifetime.

What kind of services do you offer at Northern Optical Co?

We treat every patient as an individual. We work beside people who we care for and we treat our patients in the same way.

Whatever your needs, customised to your unique situation, we provide a wide range of services to look after your eye health including NHS and private eye examinations, enhanced eye examinations, contact lens fitting, dry eye assessments, sports vision assessments, myopia management and domiciliary (home visit) services.

Can you tell us a bit more about your Sports Vision service?

We want to take care of our customers around the clock, so we do offer a vision service to support with sporting needs. Our director, Simon Birtwisle has extensive experience working with a wide range of top-level athletes, from international footballers and cricketers to competitive shooters. Our customers are guaranteed the reception adapted for their necessary requirements.

The process of our sports vision service, consists of a full assessment tailored to the specific demands of your sport, along with personalised solutions to help you perform at your very best visually.

What is your favourite eyewear trend?

Trends are always evolving, but some brands remain timeless favourites. Outspoken stands out for its vibrant, playful colours, while Etina Barcelona brings bold, statement designs. TREE offers a perfect balance of boldness and elegance. Frames may come and go with fashion, but it’s always exciting to see what’s new!

What do you love most about having a shop in the Grainger Market?

We love being a trader in the Grainger Market - from finding comfort in the sight of familiar faces passing by, to the camaraderie shared with fellow retailers. There’s a real sense of looking out for one another that makes it so special. The market is always changing, but it’s those same friendly, smiling customers that make it feel like home.

Northern Optical Co is located in Units 1-4 on Alley 1 in Grainger Market. For more information visit www.northernopticalcompany.com.
