The Hoppings Returns To The Toon For 2018

Last updated:

FRIDAY 22 - SATURDAY 30 JUNE 2018

This family-friendly funfair has made history in our city. Pop down for a whizz on the waltzers or a flight on the big wheel this June!

We’re getting serious about summer in Newcastle in this edition! We just can’t help but get excited about all of the fun things going on in the city this season...

The Hoppings is back for another summer spectacular bringing family fun and fairground rides to the Town Moor once again!

The best-loved Geordie funfair first came to Newcastle 136 years ago as a counter-attraction to the boozy goings-on at the annual Race Week at nearby Newcastle Racecourse.

In the following 50 years, the rides and attractions we all know and love today were gradually introduced to create what is now one of Europe’s largest travelling funfairs.

It’s back in the city for another year and we can’t wait to check out our favourite rides and some new attractions on the Town Moor. So gather your gang and get your umbrellas at the ready (because everyone knows it always rains when the biggest and best travelling funfair comes to the Toon)!

Round-up the whole family and tootle down to the busy and buzzy Town Moor from Friday 22 June until Saturday 30 June for guaranteed good times with over 300 rides and attractions in-situ!

A diary date for the whole family - make a day of it this June!

WHAT'S IN THE NAME?

THE MEANING BEHIND THE ‘HOPPINGS’...

Well, several origins have been suggested for the term. Most relate to dancing, while others relate to the clothing worn in the old days - often infested with fleas from the animals travelling with the fairground folk - people were often seen ‘jumping’ or ‘hopping’ around to get them off. The name may also derive from the Anglo-Saxon word ‘hoppen’, meaning funfair!
