We’ve put together a handy guide with all the info you need to make the most of this fantastic festival.
What is the Tyneside Irish Festival?
It’s an annual celebration of all things Irish organised by the Tyneside Irish Cultural Society that happens every October. Now in its 39th year, the festival is a firm fixture in Newcastle’s cultural calendar that brings together the region’s Irish community.
When is it happening?

The festival opening night on Friday 17th October includes a screening of a documentary produced for Tyne Tees Television capturing the community spirit of the second-ever Tyneside Irish Festival way back in 1988, and on Saturday 18th October there’s a Céilí Supper Night with traditional Irish music and dancing and a delicious homemade Irish stew to feast on.
On Monday 20th October, Northumbria University assistant professor Dr. Connal Parr will lead a panel exploring the Irish Anti-Apartheid Movement (IAAM) with special guest Hugo MacNeill, the Irish Rugby Union player who refused to tour South Africa in 1981 in protest of the Apartheid.
As per usual, there’s plenty for music fans to enjoy during Tyneside Irish Festival too including performances from Irish balladeer Kevin Morrin who’ll be joined by pianist Vincent Crowley, Sligo quartet Lane to the Glen and the award-winning Daoirí Farrell Trio.
The fun doesn’t end there either. During the closing day of the festival, Tyneside Irish Centre will host its annual Family Fun Day with plenty for all ages to enjoy – live music, dancing, storytelling and hands-on arts and crafts included.
