Newcastle Eats - Try Something New This NE1 Restaurant Week

Every Restaurant Week we are delighted to ask local food connoisseurs to offer us their tips, after all, who knows better where to eat in the city than those who do it so regularly?

Read below for our Guest Blog from Newcastle Eats!

Newcastle Restaurant Week is back this Monday 16th-22nd January 2017, and again it’s bigger than ever. With more than a hundred venues taking part, there’s ample opportunity to try something new. I’ve picked five restaurants which were brand new to Newcastle in 2016, and you might have missed.

Barrio Comida
The offer: £10 for Tortilla Chips, Three Tacos, and a Drink

Obviously. If you haven’t been to Barrio Comida yet – this should be your first point of call. It’s one of the most exciting things to happen to Newcastle in 2016, and I hope Shaun and his team absolutely go from strength to strength in 2017. It’s also truly in the Restaurant Week spirit and offering awesome value. For a tenner, you really can’t go wrong, but order loads of everything, and try some of the best tacos you’ll get in the UK.

What to order: Chicken Mole, Al Pastor, Carne Asada, and Cocktails.

Central Oven and Shaker
The offer: 2 Courses for £10pp or 2 Courses and a Spritz Cocktail for £15pp

Given it’s location and relatively heavy promotion, lots of people might have seen but not tried the new and shiny Central Oven & Shaker. It’s one of the best pizzas in Newcastle city centre, so there's no better to time to give it a go and save yourself a few bob. There’s salads and other things on offer, but you want one of the great pizzas, a dessert, and a cocktail for £15.

What to order: Pepperoni Pizza, Salad, Aperol Spritz.

Dobson & Parnell
The offer: £15 for 2 Courses

It’s very new, and it’s one of the smartest restaurants in the city. Coming from the Blackfriars team, it’s got all the polish you’d expect, and a great opportunity to try somewhere that bit special, but for everyday prices.

It’s a little bit cheffy - expect dots and smears, but you also get excellent service, and food to match. A fab new addition to the Quayside.

What to order: it’s a set menu, so get one of each between you and taste everything.

Red's True BBQ
The offer: £15 for Two Courses

Two courses might be a misnomer, as what you’re really getting is a taste of everything Reds do. If you’re yet to try Reds‘ authentic brand of BBQ, here’s your chance to do it for cheap – you’ll get low and slow pork, chicken, ribs, and all of those accompaniments you love, though I can’t help but notice the omission of their signature brisket… It’ll probably be a busy one, but there’s dozens of tables here, so you should be OK to rock up without a table.

What to order: Reds’ Little Plate, and the “True BBQ” Tray

The Jolly Fisherman
The offer: £10 for 2 courses / £15 for 3

Another newbie to Restaurant Week, The Jolly Fisherman might have been one you forgot to visit since it opened last year. That location just off the Quayside is a funny one that's easy to miss, but it’s a serious restaurant, and a must-visit for fish and seafood fans. Nearby 21, The Broad Chare, and Caffe Vivo, are all great in their own right, but give somewhere new a try while you've got the ideal opportunity.

What to order: Crab Soup, Roast Hake, STP

So there you are - 5 brand new restaurants which are helping Newcastle to compete on the national restaurant scene. Let me know where you’re headed, and make sure to book if possible, as tables for these will be hot!
