8 Christmas Events in Newcastle to get you in the Festive spirit

Now that the John Lewis advert (watch here if you've been living under a rock) is finally on our screens, it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! And with one of the most hotly anticipated Christmas events in Newcastle having opened its curtains – the legendary Fenwick window, of course – we’re really getting in the festive spirit here at NE1!
So, here are some other canny Christmas events in Newcastle we can expect to see before Santa Claus comes to toon.
Hadrian’s Tipi at Central Station
You may have seen or heard about it already – and for good reason! Popped up outside Central Station is the most stupendous (that originates from Latin, we’ll have you know) double tipi-style tent, inspired by the Roman Emperor’s travels through the region in AD122. Rest your weary feet from trailing ‘round the shops and pop in for a festive tipple or a bite to eat. When in NE1, hey?
Here's what you can expect to see inside Hadrian's Tipi.
When? 8am – 1am, 10th November 2016 – 1st January 2017
Ice Skating at Life Science Centre
The long-awaited ice rink is finally back, gracing Times Square with its chilly presence. We can’t wait to swoop and slice our way through the crisp air this winter, that’s if we can stay standing for more than 5 minutes. A hugely popular Christmas event in Newcastle that we highly recommend if you want to make the most of what the city has to offer this festive period.
When? 12th November 2016 – 26th February 2017
Christmas Lights Switch On at Grey Street
The only sign you need to know that Christmas is well on its way! The city is adorned with the most dazzling lights this side of Lapland. So, why not make the trip down to Grey Street this evening and watch them shine for the very first time? The Lord Mayor will be in attendance, alongside Steve and Karen from Metro Radio’s Breakfast Show, so don your hat and gloves ‘cos you’re in for a treat!
When? 5.30pm, 17th November
International Christmas Market at Grey’s Monument
The Christmas Market is back this year and it’s better than ever. The wooden stalls are being constructed as we speak and we’re excited to eat what will be coming out of them. Prepare yourself for a very real taste of Europe… You can get a currywurst from Germany, waffles from Holland, paella from Spain and crepes – both sweet and savoury – from France. What more could you want?!
When? 19th November – 11th December
Late Night Shopping at intu Eldon Square
Shh, don’t tell the kids but we heard those cheeky elves have taken their annual leave – something about cheap flights to Tenerife this time of year. Not to worry though because nothing beats a good meander ‘round the likes of Fenwick and John Lewis, all conveniently located in the warmth of intu Eldon Square, which is open until 9pm every day in the run up to Christmas. Those presents won’t buy themselves, you know!
When? 24th November – 23rd December
It’s A Wonderful Life at Tyneside Cinema
This December, the region’s favourite festive family film event returns to Tyneside Cinema. Settle down with the kids to watch the cinematic masterpiece and if the screening isn’t festive enough, then get your hands on a mulled wine and mince pie ticket when making your booking – for an extra touch of sophistication.
When? 2nd – 28th December (excluding 5th, 6th and Christmas Day)
Santa’s Grotto at Life Science Centre
It wouldn’t be Christmas without a fictitious expedition to the North Pole for a perch on St Nick’s lap (is that why they call it Lapland?!). Unfortunately, the grotto door is only open to the lucky littl’uns under 7 years old, who can even receive an early present for a mere £4, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of Christmas magic to go around! Explore the exhibitions Life Science Centre has to offer or take a detour across the ice rink and make the most of your day in the city centre.
When? 11am – 3pm, 3rd & 4th, 10th & 11th, 17th & 18th, 24th December
Christmas Night Market at Grainger Market
The toon’s beloved Grainger Market will be staying open late for the very first time in the lead-up to Christmas. The ideal opportunity to score some bespoke, unique and personalised gifts to stash under the Christmas tree. Look forward to homemade food, including hot raclette from Matthew’s Cheese and pizza from the guys at Slice. Mulled wine and hot ciders are a must while you’re browsing the stalls and listening to live music from local bands and solo artists. Learn the lindy hop and even take a tour of the underground air raid shelters. For one night only, this Christmas event is simply unmissable!
When? 5 – 9pm, 1st December
