Gamelan is a traditional Indonesian orchestra of mostly metallic instruments that blend together into a gently glittering, resonant soundworld.
The Newcastle Gamelan was built in Java - one of the centres of Gamelan music - and although it has been in the University’s Music Department for less than a year, has already attracted players in the department and across the University.
This concert combines traditional Javanese compositions with new music composed for the ensemble, including Wilujeng, and Manyarsewu, and a short, lively piece associated with Wayang Kulit, the Javanese shadow puppet theatre.
