Experience The Odyssey on 35mm at Tyneside Cinema

Catch Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey on glorious 35mm at Newcastle’s Tyneside Cinema this summer

Last updated:

Calling all film fans! Any cinephile worth their salt will know that Christopher Nolan’s latest film The Odyssey is set for release this July in what promises to be the film event of the summer.

What you might not know is that Newcastle’s very own Tyneside Cinema is one of just a few cinemas in the UK that’s screening The Odyssey on 35mm film – which, in the age of digital cinema, is something of a rarity and a special treat for true film buffs.

Tyneside Cinema is celebrating the occasion with a special foodie film event when The Odyssey is released on Friday 17th July too – but more on that below, plus all you need to know about catching the film at Newcastle’s favourite independent cinema.

What is The Odyssey about?

It’s an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic poem of the same name that’s directed by award-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan and chronicles its hero Odysseus’s dangerous, decade-long journey home after the Trojan War.

Featuring an all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Tom Holland and the biggest budget of Christopher Nolan’s career – a cool $250 million, to be precise – it’s predicted to be this summer’s biggest blockbuster.

Why should I see The Odyssey on 35mm film at Tyneside Cinema?

Nowadays, the vast majority of movies are shot using digital cameras rather than film cameras and screened in cinemas using digital video projectors rather than film projectors.

While digital cinematography has its advantages, many film buffs prefer the more natural, “cinematic” look of movies shot on film and it’s the preferred filmmaking method of directors like Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg and, of course, Christopher Nolan.

In fact, The Odyssey is the first mainstream feature film to be shot entirely on IMAX film cameras – so by catching it on 35mm film at Tyneside Cinema, you’ll be seeing the film exactly as Christopher Nolan intended it to be seen.

When is The Odyssey showing at Tyneside Cinema?

Tyneside Cinema will be showing The Odyssey from its release date on Friday 17th July until Thursday 30th July (expect on Monday 27th July) with various screening times throughout the day.

However, it’s special 35mm screenings will only be on certain dates – 17th, 18th, 19th, 23rd, 24th and 30th July – which cinephiles won’t want to miss, alongside Tyneside Cinema’s special Odyssey Greek Feast event.

What special event has Tyneside Cinema got planned for its release?

To celebrate The Odyssey’s big release date on 17th July, they’re hosting a special screening of the film complete with a Greek banquet full of Mediterranean flavours that play homage to the story’s setting.

Starting at 6pm, guests will enjoy a multi-course feast fit for the gods of Olympus featuring the likes of roast lamb kofta and traditional Greek walnut cake (plus a welcome drink) before settling in to watch a 35mm screening of the film.

How much are tickets?

Tickets for regular and 35mm showings of The Odyssey cost from £13.99 for adults and carers/assistants and from £11.99 for seniors aged 60+, students, disabled visitors and wheelchair users. Book your tickets at tynesidecinema.co.uk/event/the-odyssey.

Tickets for The Odyssey Greek Feast cost £45 per person and can be booked at tynesidecinema.co.uk/event/the-odyssey-35mm-greek-feast.

Seeing The Odyssey at Tyneside Cinema in 35mm glory this summer is a must do for film fans, but don’t forget that the cinema regularly screens other amazing movies in 35mm and is set to celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2027 with a packed schedule celebrating its past, present and future.
