The Great North Run Returns to Tyneside - 2018

The Simplyhealth Great North Run has been a North East institution since 1981. It’s the biggest half marathon in the world and those lucky enough to take part are treated to a 13.1 mile course complete with city sights, local support and a stunning seaside stretch...
SUNDAY 9 SEPTEMBER 2018
The GNR brings a full weekend of sporting fun to Tyneside every September. First up, it’s the Simplyhealth Great North 5k bringing in 1,000 runners to the banks of the Tyne on Saturday 8 September, while more than 7,500 youngsters take on either a 2.5k or a 4.5k course in the North East’s biggest kids-only events, the Mini and Junior Great North Runs.
The Great North Run weekend’s biggest event will come on Sunday 9 September when the half marathon takes to the city streets, with crowds making their way to the finish line on the South Shields seafront.
If you’re not running in the event, there are plenty of opportunities to see your loved ones take part on the day. Wave them off from Newcastle over one of the many footbridges, or head straight to the Tyne Bridge to capture that iconic shot as the Red Arrows whizz on by. After crossing the line and celebrating over in the Finishers' Village, make your way back into the city to re-fuel, re-charge and reward your tummies with some of the city's finest foodie hangouts and cocktail spots.
NE1 is set to be packed with thousands of runners and supporters from far and wide as this spectacular sporting event descends on the city once again. The hotel rooms booked, the bars bouncing and the restaurants filled with friends, families and massive foodies! Check out our guide overleaf to help you gear up, make the most of and enjoy the day in style!
Visit greatrun.org on the day and sign up for the reminder service – once the ballot opens for 2019’s event, you’ll be the first to find out. Good luck folks!
