We’re celebrating seven years of Alive After Five this autumn as it continues to have a transformational impact on Newcastle city centre, offering free parking after 5pm in seven multi-storey car parks across the city, as well as extended shopping hours all year round.

Gone are the days of the 5 o’clock exodus and the race to get home. Workers and commuters battling to leave the city as the shop front shutters come down and the lights are switched off as day turns to night.

Since the advent of Alive after Five, the city has transformed, and has seen an additional 13.7 million visitors between 5pm and 8pm, bringing with them an estimated spend of £839 million in Newcastle’s shops, restaurants, and much more!

In turn, the city’s post-5pm offering has increased exponentially to serve this new demand, with over 75 new restaurants opening in NE1 alone, leading to Newcastle having the most restaurants per person of any city outside of London.

But that’s not all, from theatre thrills and comedy clubs to award winning pubs, operas, bowling alleys and bespoke cinemas, after 5pm is a truly vibrant time of day in NE1 with options for people of all ages and tastes.

Plus, with the excitement of Christmas shopping just around the corner, Alive after Five means shops are open until 8pm all-year round, and even later as the Christmas rush kicks in, so there’s never been a better time to get started than after 5pm in Newcastle!
