NE1 Reviews: Las Iguanas Beach Bites Menu

Last updated:

As summer comes to a close, we’re seeking out the last bit of summer sun in the city. We can’t seem to get our fix of sunshine with the drop of a hat here in the North East - so indulging in a summery foodie feast is the perfect place to start.

There’s no better place to bag a bit of last minute beach life that at Las Iguanas. With an array of summer cocktails and a brilliant new Beach Bites menu, we’re transported from the buzz of Grey Street to a funky, South American beach club in no time.

It’s bright, it’s bubbly and it has everything you need for feel-good food and a sun-soaked afternoon whatever the weather outside. The team serve up a sizzling selection of South American dishes from Brazilian and Peruvian specials to mouth-watering Mexican feasts and cool, Chilean choices. It’s a cultural food journey that celebrates colourful food and top class service – with a tantalising taste of Latin American energy bringing the place alive. With an irresistible bolt of fabulous flavours, the food here pulses with its exotic roots.

We’re in to try the Beach Bites menu. From marinated chicken or halloumi skewers with sticky chilli jam, to surf and turf mini tostadas topped with your choice of crab and avocado or chipotle beef – diners can enjoy all four small plates for £16 or choose one or two for £4.95 each.  They’re great for sharing with a pal.

Satisfying the summer taste buds over a couple of classic cocktails, the sun is shining, I’m sipping margaritas and I’m channelling my finest sombrero! Scrap that… in actual fact, I’m swilling mocktails and we’re in to sample Latino life during a quick lunch break. But real life aside, and dreaming of spending the summer in Mexico, I go for the spicy chicken, pepper and onion enchilada (£8.50). A hand-rolled tortilla with smoky chipotle sauce on a bed of spring onion rice, topped with refried beans and cheese. My lunch buddy is pleased to see so many gluten free options dotted around the menu, and opts for the tasty triple tacos (£7.50) with a wide range of fillings including chipotle chicken, shredded beef, coconut squash, garlicky mushrooms, garlic chilli prawns and beetroot and halloumi.

I'd much rather be sat sipping cocktails, but as it's a lunch break, we're on the mocktails and they're just as delicious – a great taste of Latino tipples for the non-drinkers, the designated drivers or speedy lunch-breakers alike. We can’t wait to come back to make our way through the creative cocktail menu because after all, it’s Happy Hour all day, every day here!
