Everything You Need to Know About: Nao Victoria

Fancy visiting a replica of the first ship to circumnavigate the globe?

Last updated:

Last year, Newcastle was lucky enough to welcome the gorgeous Galeon Andalucia to Newcastle, and this year its sister ship – the Nao Victoria – is docking in the city centre for two weeks this July!

A fascinating floating museum, the Nao Victoria is a faithful replica of its namesake vessel – a ship associated with the greatest adventure in the history of navigation.

Excited to visit? Read on for all the info you need to know about the ship while it’s visiting Newcastle!

What is the Nao Victoria?

It’s a replica of the original Nao Victoria galleon – which made the history books in 1522 when it became the first-ever ship to circumnavigate the globe, after an epic voyage that began in 1519.

The replica, which was built in 1991, repeated the original Nao Victoria’s epic round-the-world journey between 2004 and 2006 and over the past 13 years it’s visited major ports in the USA and Europe, welcoming over 6 million visitors.

In a nutshell, it’s a floating museum and a stunning symbol of Spain’s rich maritime history!

Where in Newcastle is it docked?

The Nao Victoria is docked at NE1’s Newcastle City Marina on Newcastle’s Quayside.

How long will the Nao Victoria be in Newcastle for?

It’ll be docked and open to visitors from Tuesday 15th July to Sunday 27th July and is open daily from 10am to 8pm.

What can I expect to see on the galleon?

You’ll have the unique opportunity to board the ship, walk its decks and experience what life was like for the sailors that lived aboard the galleon when it made its round-the-world voyage 500 years ago!

Is it family-friendly?

It is indeed! In fact, we think kids will get a kick out of exploring this fascinating floating museum while learning a thing or two about the original Nao Victoria’s rich heritage! Children of all ages are welcome to explore the ship, but please note that kids under 5 must be accompanied by an adult.

How much do tickets cost?

Tickets cost £8 for adults and kids over the age of 10, £4 for kids aged 5-10 and it’s free to come on board for children under 5. Family tickets, admitting two adults and up to three children, are available too and priced at £20.

Guided tours for schools are also available costing from £4 (ages 5-10) or £8 (kids over 10), with one free teacher’s place for every 10 children. For more information about school trips or to book, email [email protected] or call +34 954 090 956.

How do I book tickets for Nao Victoria?

Tickets can be purchased online at tickets.fundacionnaovictoria.org or onboard the ship but we’re expecting the Nao Victoria to be really popular, so we’d recommend booking in advance to avoid missing out on the opportunity to explore this maritime marvel!

Whether you’re a maritime history enthusiast or a complete landlubber, don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience a slice of Spanish history in the heart of Newcastle this summer!

The Nao Victoria will be in place at NE1’s Newcastle City Marina from Tuesday 15th July to Sunday 27th July 2025. For more information and to book tickets, visit fundacionnaovictoria.org/nao-victoria.
