How To Celebrate National Cheese Lover's Day In Newcastle

Wondering how to celebrate National Cheese Lover's Day in Newcastle? Well, you’re in the right place…

Last updated:

It may not be Halloween or Christmas, but any day celebrating cheese is red-circled in our diaries!

From sampling delicious toasties to the stores stocking all your cheesy favourites, take a look at some of the places you need to visit during National Cheese Lover’s Day on 4th June!

The French Quarter, Westgate Road

Nestled in Arch 6 under the railway arches on Westgate Road, The French Quarter’s (pictured above) cheese offering is at the top of its game - alongside some of the finest wines in NE1! Served with homemade jam and walnuts, be sure to try the soft and creamy comté vieille réserve, 18 months matured cheese from the Jura region of Eastern France. Those looking to indulge in the 'queen of cheeses', dive head first into the brie de Meaux - a stunning soft cheese from northern France. Kick back with a glass of the good stuff from the Bordeaux region and you’re onto a winner. The French Quarter is the place to be for those looking to celebrate in style!

Fenwick Delicatessen, Fenwick, Northumberland Street

A food-lover's heaven, right here in the city centre. Fenwick Food Hall's Delicatessen is home to a wide variety of gorgeous cheesy delights. From local cheddars to international must-try cheeses, Fenwick Delicatessen work closely alongside producers and food artists to make sure you’re tasting only the finest of fromages. Make sure you browse through the enticing counter, brimming with Yorkshire Wensleydale, brilliant brie, excellent Emmental and a whole host of other cheesy delights!

Redheads Mac'N'Cheese Redheads Mac'N'Cheese

Redheads Mac’N’Cheese, Grainger Market

Make sure you wander over to Redheads Mac ’n’ Cheese in Grainger Market for gooey, stringy treats! Having found fame as the North East’s first mac ’n’ cheese street food vendor, Redhead’s is the Toon's lunchtime go-to spot for a portion of delectable mac ’n’ cheese goodness. What are you waiting for? Rally the troops and try the chorizo-topped cheesy macaroni - it's as good as it sounds!

ChaChaBuchi, Collingwood Street

Head over to Newcastle's chicest cheese haven, ChaChaBuchi, on Collingwood Street where you can enjoy their famous oozy cheese fondue in sophisticated, decadent surroundings. With stylish decor and drinks galore, it's the perfect backdrop for a cheese fest! Their fondue is a bubbling pot of dipping heaven - Swiss cheese, camembert and chardonnay all combined and ready for you to dunk in sourdough chunks, potato tots and pickles. Or go all out and order garlic prawns, baby chorizo and Spanish charcuterie to up your cheese dipping game.

La Casa Delicatessen La Casa Delicatessen

La Casa Delicatessen, Grainger Market

Ay caramba! Sweet dreams are made of cheese, and who are we to disagree when there are stacks of Spanish cheese and accompaniments to explore at La Casa Delicatessen! Be whisked away to Spain in an instant with a trip to this fabulous place. The friendly faces at Unit 39 bring a world-class offering of all things fromage from sunny Spain. From smooth semi-cured Manchego, to oh-so rich Valdeon blue cheese, there's plenty to get your tastebuds tingling! Head here, secure wheel-after-wheel of fromage goudaness and treat yourself to some January indulgence. Go on, you know it makes sense!

Matthew’s Cheese Specialists, Grainger Market

Transport yourself to fromage fantasy land this January with a trip to fellow Grainger Market cheese hotspot Matthew's Cheese Specialists. With over 100 different English and continental cheeses to choose from, Matthew's is the talk of the Toon not only for the abundance of cheese on offer, but for its excellent customer service! It's the ideal spot to pick up a block of the good stuff and celebrate National Cheese Lover’s Day in style!

M&S Food Hall, Northumberland Street

A veritable heaven for foodies on Northumberland Street, you’ll already know that the M&S Food Hall is jam-packed with plenty of delicious delicacies. Their cheese counter is where charcuterie connoisseurs will want to linger, with plenty of varieties to pick from, and crackers, chutneys and condiments handily nearby. Plus, just in case a camembert “accidentally” falls into your basket, their bakery section is only a couple of aisles over, so it’d almost be rude not to pick up a freshly-baked baguette too!

Blackfriars, Friar Street

For something a little different to complete our round-up, we’re heading to Blackfriars, where there’s cheese-themed events aplenty to help you celebrate. Book your ticket to “Come Wine with Me – Cheese & Wine Matching” and uncover the perfect pairings of top drawer cheeses and fabulous wine, or if you prefer a different tipple, their “Water of Life – Whisky & Cheese Tasting” promises to open your eyes to some new combinations!

So wherever you plan on getting your cheese fix this National Cheese Lover's Day, there’s so many ways to celebrate in Newcastle that we almost can’t brie-lieve it!
