Everything You Need To Know About: NE1’s Summer in the City

A handy guide to getting the most out of our fun-packed Summer in the City programme

Last updated:
NE1's Summer In The City

NE1's Summer in the City is back for 2025 bringing you a fun-packed programme of free events to enjoy throughout the summer holidays.

From kid-friendly activities and fitness sessions for adults to tours, cake decorating classes and more, there's something to do all summer long. With so much going on, we've put together a handy guide with all the info you need to know to have a blast this summer.

What Is NE1’s Summer in the City?

NE1’s Summer In The City is a series of activities and events taking place in the summer (mostly during the school holidays) across the city but focused on the Quayside. It’s all aimed at giving the people of Newcastle and its visitors things to do that are fun, outdoors and active and free. From fitness classes to storytelling for kids, there’s something for every age group, ability and interest.

How long does Summer in the City run for?

Although some of the activities start earlier, such as the Screen On The Green sports schedule, the focus is on the school holidays, so for this year it runs from 21st July to 31st August 2025.

What activities and events are happening?

We have a tonne of fun in store for all of you over the summer! For kids, there's everything from family yoga classes to a whole host of fun events from Let's Party North East including a Teddy Bear Picnic and a Superhero Smash and the return our popular Tales on the Tyne storytelling sessions.

For the grown-ups, we've got loads of fitness-based fun happening all summer long - from Zumba and HIIT workouts to vinyasa yoga classes with morning sessions and evening sessions and a class dedicated to toning Legs, Bums and Tums.

For the culture vultures and history buffs, there's walking tours from Newcastle City Guides - including Fog on the Tyne and Murderous Newcastle - but fi you'd like to combine fitness and culture CBK Adventures' River Tyne Kayak Tours are ideal. You'll not only work up a sweat paddling up and down the Tyne but also learn fascinating facts about the river and its bridges along the way!

Our hit event Dog on the Tyne event that made its debut last year is back by popular demand, taking place on Saturday 16th August and bringing tonnes of fun for your four-legged friends to the Quayside this summer. With everything from dog yoga and canine crafts to marvellous market stalls, an agility course, talks and dog walks, it's the perfect day out for puppers and their humans!

New for this year, we're bringing an action-packed family fun day to Newcastle this summer with Quayside Carnival! Taking over the riverfront, all the way from NE1’s Newcastle City Marina to past Pitcher & Piano, there’ll be tonnes of family-friendly activities – including meet-and-greets with your favourite characters, circus workshops and performances, arts and crafts, face painting and a challenge zone for older kids. It’s set to be a great day out for the whole family – and best of all, it’s free!

And let's not forgot all the fun to be had over at Old Eldon Square where you can watch sport and films with Screen on the Green, enjoy our miniature Newcastle play village Tiny Toon and a brand-new stay-and-play space featuring sensory activities like sandpits and play walls.

This is just a taster of all the Summer in the City fun on offer this year, so make sure to check out the official Summer in the City website for even more events and activities.

Can anybody get involved?

Of course! Most events are suitable for kids or people or all ages, but conditions will apply (especially for kayak tours), so check the Summer in the City website before booking.

How do I book?

Booking details for all events and activities are on NE1's Summer in the City website.

How much does it all cost?

All of NE1's Summer in the City events are completely free of charge - so you can have fun all summer long without breaking the bank!
