A handy guide to getting the most out of our fun-packed Summer in the City programme
NE1's Summer in the City is back for 2024 bringing you a fun-packed programme of free events to enjoy throughout the summer holidays.
From kid-friendly activities and fitness sessions for adults to tours, dance classes, a mini-music festival and more, there's something to do all summer long. With so much going on, we've put together a handy guide with all the info you need to know to have a blast this summer.
What Is NE1’s Summer in the City?
NE1’s Summer In The City is a series of activities and events taking place in the summer (mostly during the school holidays) across the city but focused on the Quayside. It’s all aimed at giving the people of Newcastle and its visitors things to do that are fun, outdoors and active, and mostly free. From dance classes to storytelling, there’s something for every age group, ability and interest.
How long does Summer in the City run for?
Although some of the activities start earlier, such as the Screen On The Green sports schedule, the focus is on the school holidays, so for this year it runs from 22nd July to 1st September.
What activities and events are happening?
We have a tonne of fun in store for all of you over the summer. For kids, there's everything from dance classes in hip-hop, breakdancing and ballet from the wonderful team at Dance City to our much-loved Tales on the Tyne storytelling sessions hosted by Seven Stories with very special guest Alfie Joey of BBC Radio Newcastle fame taking over for one day only. There's more story-based fun with Live Theatre and their Story Inventors events and Let's Party are hosting both pop-up events and weekend Kids' Clubs throughout the summer offering crafts, games, singing, dancing, character meet-and-greets and more.
For the grown-ups, we've got loads of fitness-based fun happening all summer long. The expert yogis from Yoga x Life are hosting morning, midday and twilight vinyasa yoga classes while Pure Gym will be delivering a series of zumba, Pilates and High Energy Active Training sessions. There's even a 5k run alongside the Quayside with Lululemon ambassador Tim Briggs!
If that sounds a little too much like hard work, you could always book up for one of our popular tours which this year offer treks up Grey's Monument, a heritage-based walk around the Quayside Chares and the Fog on the Tyne walking tour where you'll find out tonnes of interesting facts about the River Tyne's iconic bridges. For a mix of tours and action, you can even take to river itself with our River Tyne Kayak Tour delivered by the amazing team at CBK Adventures!
Music by the Marina - a day of top-class tunes from local acts - is one music mavens won't want to miss and this year we're excited to announce a brand-new event with Dog on the Tyne, a day full of fun for our canine companions featuring dog yoga, a 2k dog walk, free paw-puccinos for the puppers and much, much more.
And let's not forgot all the fun to be had over at Old Eldon Square where you can watch sport and films with Screen on the Green, keep the little ones entertained with our artistic play space Play Rebellion and enjoy our brand-new attraction Tiny Toon - a miniature play village home to tiny versions of local landmarks, buildings and businesses for kids to play pretend in delivered in association with Tyne & Wear Metro.
This is just a taster of all the Summer in the City fun on offer this year, so make sure to check out the official Summer in the City website for even more events and activities.
Can anybody get involved?
Of course! Most events are suitable for kids or people or all ages, but conditions will apply (especially for kayak tours), so check the Summer in the City website before booking.
How do I book?
Booking details for all events and activities are on NE1's Summer in the City website.
How much does it all cost?
Most of the events and activities are free, although some events featured on the Summer in the City website hosted by external providers are priced - all the details you need to know are on the website.
Newcastle is a lively place at the best of times, but during the summer it’s even more energetic than usual as the team here at NE1 lay on lots of activities to keep you all entertained. So take in a movie, get your kids to tell tall tales or put your best foot forward with a Quayside hip-hop dance class. And with most of it being free, there’s no excuse for sitting around wishing there was something to do during the holidays!
