There are lots of excellent changes that come into being across the festive period: restaurants start offering seasonal menus, cinemas start showing festive films, everything is a riot of sparkling lights and red and green bursts of colour.

But ultimately, what we hanker for most during the other eleven months of the year is the Christmas cocktail - the taste of Santa in a glass! We’ve gathered a delectable selection of the finest Christmas cocktails on offer across the season in the city... all you have to do is drink them!

The Real Greek Christmas Cocktails The Real Greek Christmas Cocktails

The Real Greek, Eldon Square

This nationwide purveyor of authentic Greek flavours has created some special Hellenic Christmas cocktails for you to enjoy all the way to Boxing Day. There’s the Festive Frozen Fizz with Axia & Spiced Berries, a frozen blend of Axia Mastiha (a very dry, very Greek alcohol) with Crème de Cassis, spiced red berry syrup and prosecco. Or if you fancy a mocktail, there’s the Spiced Berry Bliss Mocktail which mixes cranberry, lemon, spiced red berry syrup soda (although you could top this one up with prosecco too!).

The Mad House, Pink Lane

The self-proclaimed ‘maddest bar in Newcastle’ prides itself on delirious interior design and a constantly changing cocktail list, and they’re pulling out all the stops with their Christmas cocktails. There’s a selection of ten different festive specials, from the Don’t Drink Yellow Snow (tequila, coconut and white chocolate liqueur, milk and mystery syrup) to Apple Of My Pie (Jack Daniels, citrus, cinnamon and apple juice). Don’t forget the happy hours too – with two for £16 on selected afternoons.

Slug & Lettuce, Quayside & Grainger Street

This popular chain has two branches in Newcastle, on the Quayside and Grainger Street, and they’ll both be serving up Boujee Christmas Cocktail specials. There’s six to choose from, each with a splash of Santa’s magic. Perhaps you fancy the Candy Land (Midori, Ciroc Passion Fruit, pineapple juice and Mexican Lime Soda) or the Chocolate Orange Martini (Baileys, Cointreau, Mozart White Chocolate Liqueur, double cream and topped with a favourite Christmas chocolate)? There’s even Freddie The Festive Flamingo, very much the taste of a beach holiday Christmas with Cîroc Passion vodka, sweet coconut syrup, lychee purée, grapefruit soda and lemonade, finished with a mini bottle of Prosecco).

Miller & Carter's Christmas Cocktails Miller & Carter's Christmas Cocktails

Miller & Carter, Mosley Street

Miller & Carter might be all about steak but their drinks selection is always carefully curated too and they’ve added a quartet of quite tasteful (and tasty) Christmas cocktails to their menu that will be available till Christmas Eve. Choose from the Winter Berry Cooler, the Jingle Berry Sour, the Mint Chocolate Bakewell and the Merry Cherry Bakewell. All this and their special festive food menu too!

Bar + Block, Newgate Street

Another fine steakhouse that has added some seasonal specials to an already appealing cocktail list is Bar + Block. Appearing alongside an already inviting drinks list are a trio of elaborate Christmas options. There’s the Baubletini, a blend of Absolut Raspberri, Triple Sec and Martina Extra Dry with maple syrup and cranberry, served in an actual bauble! Or the Star & Block – Bailey’s Chocolat Luxe, Absolut Vanilla, chocolate syrup, salted caramel syrup and milk topped with a chocolate star. Or what about the Candy Cane Martini with Absolut Raspberri, Baileys, strawberry and frosted mint syrup with milk? And if your group really want to go Christmas-crazy, there’s the Christmas Tree Cocktail offer – 6 of the limited cocktails served on an actual tree for just £45!

Revolution, Collingwood Street

Sitting pretty in the heart of the Newcastle party zone, Revolution always pulls out all the stops, and so it is with their Christmas cocktail menu. There are seven specials to choose from, kicking off with the Caning It In Wonderland, which has Ketel One vodka, Revolution Cherry Flavour, strawberry purée, a splash of lime and lemonade, served with a candy cane! Or why not try the Gingerbread Mantini - a tempting mix of Belvedere vodka, Mozart milk chocolate liqueur, gingerbread syrup and fresh coffee.

Colonel Porter's Christmas Cocktails Colonel Porter's Christmas Cocktails

Colonel Porter’s, Dean Street

Colonel Porter’s is known for its quirky, often Victoriana-themed approach to things, and its Christmas cocktail selection is no exception. Taking their place on the breathtaking drinks list are a couple of seasonal smashers. There’s the puntastic Fizzytale Of New York, a tempting blend of marmalade vodka, orange liqueur, sugar, prosecco and an orange twist. Or perhaps the Gingerbread Rock is more your cup of tea - an alluring combo of dark spiced rum, gingerbread syrup and flamed orange peel?

Flares, Mosley Street

Everyone in Newcastle knows that Flares takes its fun seriously, and that’s true of its Christmas cocktails. There’s a quartet of colourful options amongst its Quality Street-inspired concoctions: the Purple One and the Green Triangle are both Smirnoff Vodka based, while the Orange Crème is a Baileys concoction and the Coconut Éclair throws some tropical vibes into the mix with some Captain Morgan’s rum.

Retro Christmas Pop-Up Bar, Times Square

Running until New Year’s Eve Eve (that’s a thing, right?) with a break for Christmas and Boxing Day, the Retro Christmas Pop-Up Bar is located in the new Rusty’s Lounge on Times Square and is the last word in Christmas nostalgia: an eighties-themed venue with retro decorations! And to go with the Christmas vibes there’s obviously a Christmas cocktail menu.  There’s around twenty to choose from, including some mocktails, and some seasonal shots too. We like the look of the Bad Santa (cognac, port and a whole lot more). And the Santa’s Little Helpers (sherry, tequila and prosecco). And the.. well, you get the idea.

Manahatta's Biscoff It's Christmas Cocktail Manahatta's Biscoff It's Christmas Cocktail

Manahatta, Collingwood Street

Manahatta might be a new arrival on the Newcastle bar scene, but the Northern chain has more than twenty years in the game and knows how to do Christmas just right. That applies to its short but very tempting seasonal cocktail menu. There’s the Biscoff It’s Christmas - a mix of Ketel One vodka, Baileys Luxe, Shanky’s Whip, Biscoff and cream - or the Christmas Pornstar whicb mixes Cîroc Passion vodka, blackberry, winter spice, pineapple, lemon, and prosecco. And there’s 2-4-1 deals to look out for too!

It’s incredible the way a flavour can evoke a mood, especially when it comes to Christmas: a hint of nutmeg, a little tickle of cinnamon, a splash of gingerbread and all of a sudden it’s Christmas Eve. And that’s why Christmas cocktails are so special – they’re a lovely embodiment of the season in liquid form. We’ve suggested some of the best in Newcastle – you know what to do next!
