Last updated:
Duke's Saloon

You’re positively spoilt for choice when it comes to new places to explore and experiences to try – whether that’s dining on Brazilian-Japanese fusion fare at NIPO, shopping for all things Korean at Oseyo or sipping on fine wines at Chateau Nouveau. So, say hello to the Toon’s newcomers and discover your new favourite hangout this autumn!

Duke’s Saloon, Groat Market

Grab your cowboy boots and dust off your Stetsons because there’s a new kid in the Toon in the shape of Duke’s Saloon, a Texas-inspired joint promising wild honky-tonk nights fuelled by cold beer and tequila. Listen to live country music in its Toon Saloon, chill out with a drink on its open-air Campfire or unleash your inner Dolly Parton at its Karaoke Ranch – yeehaw, indeed!

Chateau Nouveau, Westgate Road

Wine lovers will definitely want to put this new Westgate Road bar on their bucket list. Dubbing itself “a wine and spirit library”, Chateau Nouveau offers a range of carefully curated wines and spirits, cheese and charcuterie boards and regular tasting events with master winemakers and distillers for any budding connoisseurs wanting to hone their knowledge and taste buds.

Haku Haku Haku Haku

Haku Haku, Grainger Market

Newcastle’s iconic Grainger Market is forever attracting fabulous new traders (as you’re about to find out!) and first up it’s Haku Haku. It’s a must do for matcha fans and serves a range of traditional blends – from Ujiji lattes ideal for matcha newbies to stronger varieties like Kyototo for the seasoned match pros – that are perfect for refreshing and refuelling during a Grainger Market shopping sesh.

GOODS., Northumberland Road

Put simply, GOODS. is a little bit of everything – a café, a juice bar, a wellness shop, baker and organic grocer all in one! Their all-day kitchen is open for sit-in and takeaway, but there's loads more to explore, like their range of specialty coffee, performance smoothies, baked goods and frozen yoghurt. They’re all about supporting other like-minded independents too so expect to find items from plenty of local and loved businesses here.

Funstation Newcastle, The Gate

With venues offering everything from bowling, axe throwing and escape room challenges, The Gate is the place to be if you’re looking for some fun and it’s about to get a whole lot more entertaining when Funstation opens there this autumn. Promising the ultimate entertainment experience for fun-seekers both young and old, there’ll be everything from arcade games and interactive gaming to football challenges and attractions to enjoy.

NIPO NIPO

NIPO, Quayside

For a dining experience that’s a little bit different, Quayside newbie NIPO is perfect. Serving Japanese-Brazilian fusion cuisine, the restaurant gets its name the Nipo-Brasileiro community of São Paulo, home to the biggest Japanese population outside of Japan. Blending Japanese precision with Brazilian warmth, diners can expect Japanese-inspired dishes like sushi and robata-grilled fare alongside classic flame-cooked Brazilian specialities like picanha.

Dylan’s Philly Cheesesteak, Grainger Market

Also soon joining Grainger Market’s community of traders is Dylan’s Philly Cheesesteak. As their name suggests, the specialise in serving up classic Philadelphia cheesesteaks: a humble yet hearty hoagie sandwich packed with ribeye steak, provolone cheese and cheese whiz sauce. We don’t know about you, but our bellies are rumbling already!

Nova Nails & Beauty, Grainger Street

Deck out your digits with some of the most creative designs in the Toon at new nail bar Nova Nails & Beauty. From their warm and welcoming salon on Grainger Street, they offer a range of nail treatments – from Russian manicures to BIAB gel nails – alongside beauty treatments including brow waxing and eyebrow tinting. Makeover incoming!

Oseyo Oseyo

Oseyo, Eldon Square

A one-stop shop for all things Korean, Oseyo – the UK’s largest Asian supermarket chain – opened its biggest store to date in Eldon Square over the summer and we couldn’t be happier. It’s positively packed to the rafters with food and drink, homeware, beauty products, stationery and toys and Oseyo’s iconic Ramyun Library, home to the biggest collection of noodles that we’ve ever seen in our lives. More like ram-yum, right?!

Canton Kitchen, Low Friar Street

Formerly known as Nudo Malatang, this Low Friar Street restaurant got a rebrand over the summer and now goes by Canton Kitchen, a hotspot for Hong Kong comfort food in the heart of Newcastle. Feast on fare like dim sum, soup noodles, claypot rice and their signature Hong Kong roast meats – perhaps washed down with a Hong Kong-style soda float?

LJ’s Mexican Street Food, Grainger Market

Yet another new addition to Grainger Market, LJ’s Mexican Street Food does exactly what it says on the tin, serving up tasty and traditional Mexican eats. Head here for tacos and quesadillas available with a range of mouth-watering fillings and team with sides like papas arrugadas and tortilla chips with dips.

They purchase your own pre-loved items for cash too, so check them out if you’ve anything designer in your wardrobe you’d like to give a new lease of life!

Chinese 98, Haymarket

For some quick, tasty and affordable food, look no further than Chinese 98, conveniently located just next to Haymarket Metro. Centred around a “build your own meal”, diners choose their box size and base (steamed rice, fried rice or chow mein) and customise with a range of meat and veg options – think the likes of kung po chicken, sweet and sour pork and stir-fried broccoli. Perfect for a fast and flavoursome lunch!

Football Devotion Football Devotion

Football Devotion, Grainger Market

After a decade as an online store, locally-born brand Football Devotion finally has a brick-and-mortar store at… you guessed it… Grainger Market! Perfect for footies fans, they sell a range of original and retro football-inspired designs – from t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies to coasters, mugs and prints paying homage to clubs from across the UK and globe. But know that’ll be judging you if dare buy anything other than NUFC merch!

Tia’s Mexican Cantina, The Gate

Grab your amigos and get booked up for a flavoursome fiesta at The Gate’s new restaurant Tia’s Mexican Cantina. Tuck into everything from street-style tacos and quesadillas to chimichangas and Mexico’s national dish mole poblano – perfect washed down with one of Tia’s signature frozen margaritas.

Full Circle at Fenwick, Northumberland Street

Craft beer fans need no longer make the trek to Ouseburn because legendary local brewery Full Circle Brew Co is bringing its libations to the heart of the Toon with its first-ever Newcastle city centre pub in Fenwick. Expect guest beers, collaborations and tap takeovers – plus plenty of Full Circle brews too, of course – alongside tasty fried chicken and smash burgers from local street food vendor Peckin’ Order.

Jungli Jungli

Jungli, Hood Street

Nestled in a stylish spot on Newcastle's Hood Street, Jungli is a must-do for adventurous diners, focusing on a “playful approach to Indian-inspired food." Their tempting menu features plenty of classic Indian dishes alongside creative fusion plates like spaghetti chicken butter masala, coastal spiced chorizo and gunpowder sausage with Bihari mash served alongside signature cocktails, with live music and DJs setting the vibe. It’s the brainchild of the same team behind Jesmond favourite Chakh Doom too, so you know you’re in for some fantastic food here.

LMA Newcastle, St. James’ Boulevard

If you’re looking to kickstart a career in the creative industries, the brand-new Newcastle campus of LMA should be on your radar. The academy joins existing campuses in London and Liverpool and offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in areas like acting, event and festival management, dance and music production and is sure to nurture the next generation of creative talent right in the heart of the Toon.

Tan Hill Inn at St. James’ STACK, Gallowgate

You may have heard of The Tan Hill Inn – the Yorkshire-based pub that that’s the highest in the country at 1,732 feet above sea level – and we’re happy to report they’ve recently opened at outlet at St. James’ STACK. Naturally, they’re serving up their signature pub grub with lots of tasty treats to enjoy – pies, fish and chips and their famous Yorkshire pudding wraps included.

Splatter Art Studio Splatter Art Studio

Splatter Art Studio, Westgate Road

And last but by no means least, why not unleash your inner artist with some creative, messy fun at Newcastle newcomer Splatter Art Studio?. Create your own Jackson Pollock-esque piece to hang at home with a choice of splatter art or pour art sessions and – if you’re looking to make an occasion really special – the studio hosts children’s parties and corporate team building sessions too!

Coming soon…

That’s not all either! Alongside all the venues above, Newcastle is set to welcome even more new businesses over the coming months too including branches of coffee chain Blank Street and iconic British restaurant The Ivy plus Firebird, a luxury buffet opening soon in The Gate. Stay tuned for more info!

With so many new places to explore (and more on the way too!) Newcastle is certainly an exciting place to be right now. The only question left is – where are you trying out first?
