12 Top Clubs and Pubs for Student Drinks in Newcastle

Our top picks of the best clubs and pubs for student drinks in Newcastle

Last updated:

Whether you're a fresher finding your feet in Newcastle, or returning from a year abroad, you'll probably want to get to know the latest and greatest names in the city's legendary nightlife.

So we’ve rounded up some of the best bars, pubs and clubs in Newcastle that are perfect for students planning a night out.

Livello, Lower Dean Street

Livello (pictured above) aims straight for the luxury end of the bar scene, with a classy and inventive drinks menu and regular club nights that take full advantage of its impressive layout and heated courtyard. Open 'til 3am on weekends, Livello is definitely one of the most impressive joints in town.

The Dog & Parrot, Clayton Street West

The Dog & Parrot is a perennial student favourite, a longstanding institution renowned for great beer and great music spread across its two floors. It’s open 'til 2am daily as well, for proper party people wanting to dance into the wee hours of the morning.

Soho Rooms, Mosley Street

Located on Mosley Street, Soho Rooms is another multi-level venue with plenty to offer the student body. Open 'til 3:30am on weekends, and with a range of weekly nights and one-off specials, it’s a real crowd-pleaser to keep on your radar for any occasion.

Flares, Mosley Street

Another of Mosley Street’s big student draws is Flares, a self-styled ‘party bar’ that shamelessly embraces the cheese, with all sorts of disco, funk, eighties classics and a Grease-themed night! Open 'til 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, Flares always has plenty of drinks offers and specials to tempt you too.

Alvinos Alvinos

Alvinos, Pilgrim Street

Alvinos is a veritable TARDIS and home to some of the best cocktails in the city. Its interior is vibey and stylish but low-key, and its been a city hotspot for years. Some excellent DJs set up in the DJ booth every Friday and Saturday night to entertain the drinkers spread across its vertiginous three floors (with a terrace too).

Revolution, Collingwood Street

Revolution is a commanding presence right in the heart of Newcastle’s Diamond Strip. This spacious venue used to be a bank but now specialises in cocktails, burgers and party vibes. There are always plenty of offers and deals and they cater to parties and private events. They’re open 'til 10pm on weekdays and 'til 2am in Saturdays so there’s plenty of time to enjoy yourself before heading out to a club!

Cosy Joes,Groat Market

While listening to great DJs might be fine most of the time (and Cosy Joes offers that too), sometimes you want to do-it-yourself and this big and busy bar is the place to go for a night of karaoke. There are ‘Party Pods’ catering for between four and twenty-five people, with all manner of hire packages available, or you can take your chances on the main Karaoke Stage. Cosy Joes is open 'til 2am most nights (3am on Friday and Saturday!).

The Five Swans, St Mary’s Place

Following in a similar vein is The Five Swans. You can’t miss all the seating out front on this St Mary’s Place staple – plus it’s basically halfway between Newcastle and Northumbria university, making it an ideal spot for a post-lecture pint, no matter where your pals are studying. It’s a Wetherspoons so you know what to expect – a vast range of cheap drinks and food in a big, bustling building.

Manahatta Manahatta

Manahatta, Collingwood Street

Bringing plenty of New York glamour to Newcastle’s Collingwood Street, Manahatta has the party vibe perfected. As well as instagrammable aesthetics, there’s loads of deals to make the most of, including 2-4-1 cocktails, themed bottomless brunches and even “Stocks on the Rocks”, where prices rise and fall throughout the night!

The Old George Inn, Old George Yard, Cloth Market

If glitzy bars aren’t quite your thing and you prefer old school pubs, then The Old George Inn is as old school as it gets: a 16th century pub in its own coaching yard! They offer everything you’d expect from a pub and much more – good food and drinks, sports TV, DJs at the weekend (when they're open 'til 2am) and a really welcoming atmosphere.

Kabannas, Carliol Square

Don’t dismiss Kabannas as just a hostel so quickly! They’ve got a brilliant bar, stacked with student offers that you’ll definitely want to check out. Happy hour runs every day from 4pm-8pm, and there’s offers across beer pong… and prosecco pong, if that’s more your thing! Plus, their Infusion nights run every Saturday, spinning house and tech tunes from 3pm to 11pm to kickstart your night the right way.

The Hancock, Hancock Street

And last, but by no means least, if all you’re looking for is a great pint and a great atmosphere, then head to The Hancock. Just a stones throw from Newcastle University, there’s food, live sport and student-exclusive offers to make the most of. What more could you ask for?!

We’re just scratching the surface of great student-friendly bars, pubs and clubs in the city to have a few drinks on a big night out. Newcastle is thronged with locations to suit all tastes, but hopefully these suggestions will help our city's students plan a great night out!
