DISCOVERY SCHOOL

We’d like to introduce our NE1 readers to Discovery School, a 13-19 school in the centre of Newcastle, specialising in STEM: science, technology, engineering and maths. International Women’s Day falls on 8th March this year, and with women still vastly underrepresented in the STEM field despite their talents, we’re reaching out to the female students of tomorrow. Careers in STEM range from mathematicians, engineers, architects, and scientists, to working with special effects, sound engineering, physiotherapy, healthcare roles, medical, software design and so much more! Pop along to the Discovery School's Open Evening on Wednesday 14th March and see for yourself what makes this thriving industry tick. With great teachers and great facilities, Discovery School is the place to be for budding STEM students.

SPREAD THE COST

The nights are getting lighter and summer is in sight. With that in mind, we’ve got our heads in holiday brochures, searching for our next summer getaway. Our friends at Thomas Cook know it’s not easy to fork out all the funds in one go, so they’re making life simpler with easy to manage, monthly direct debit payments on selected holidays. Book your next trip in store now with just a £50pp deposit and pay monthly as time to get planning for the summer season ahead! Pop in and see the team on Northumberland Street, or give them a call on 0191 6911911.

SHORTLISTED SMASHBURGER!

One of our favourite city centre burger joints is smashing it in the UK National Burger Awards 2018! intu Eldon Square’s Smashburger has been named as a finalist for the National Burger Awards, hosted by Casual Dining Magazine. The NE1 restaurant will be hoping to impress the judges, delivering maximum burger happiness with every bite of their Triple Hot Triple Double burger. What’s in it? Two beef patties, two slices of American cheese and one slice of aged cheddar. It’s the beefiest, cheesiest burger in town and we can’t wait to try it for ourselves.

CHINESE TEA CEREMONY

This February we quite literally painted the town red with the Chinese New Year celebrations. We marked The Year of the Dog in style in NE1 with dragon-dancing, a traditional Chinese lion parade, flag wavers and themed floats. To coincide with the vibrant celebrations, La Yuan hosted a traditional Chinese Tea ceremony and menu. The restaurant is the first venue in the North East to offer classic Chinese Tea Ceremonies, available with advanced bookings. The menu boasts over 15 traditional, hand-picked Chinese teas - from Oolong Tea to Flower Tea, there’s something for all tastes and preferences.

NEWCASTLE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

We’re incredibly excited about the arrival of Newcastle International Film Festival this spring, shining a very bright light on the region as a place for movie-making magic! With over 2,000 submissions from 87 countries, this inspiring new festival will showcase North East films in a special ‘Homegrown Talent’ film thread alongside wonderful regional classics including Get Carter and Doomsday from Geordie director Neil Marshall. The festival will also see various world premieres, including the highly anticipated Urban & the Shed Crew starring The Hobbit’s Richard Armitage and Stranger Things’ Charlie Heaton and KISS vs MCZ, a documentary following the collaboration between American rock legends KISS and japanese girl-group Momoiro Clover Z. Make sure you check out the festival’s intimate Q&As, workshops and panel discussions with industry specialists. Stay tuned for a full programme of events and buy your tickets at:

AKENSIDE TRADERS

We’ve got some great news for foodies and pub-goers… one of the Quayside’s best-loved pubs has undergone a huge £325,000 refurbishment and it’s ready to open its doors to the people of NE1 this March! With a continued love of sport and an emphasis on fun, visitors can expect a full-sized video wall, a retro shuffleboard table, bookable booths with private TVs, craft beer, bottomless prosecco and stone-baked sourdough pizzas. What more could you want out of a city centre pub? We can’t wait to pop in and see what it’s all about.

ANTLER

People of NE1 will be able to live it up in a vibrant après-ski environment this year as Chrysalis Leisure Group team up with the Mahiki Group to bring Antler to Newcastle - an alpine ski lodge inspired bar and restaurant. This exciting new venture, due to open in May, will transform the Fat Buddha site into an inspiring space boasting both the Asian style restaurant upstairs and the luxurious ski lodge bar downstairs. This hot new venue will come with a packed-out programme of live entertainment, rustic interiors, a heated, outdoor alpine garden and best-loved Mahiki cocktails. Stay tuned on social media for more information and teasers! We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait to check out this new and inspiring NE1 hangout.

CHEESE TOON

You’re not going to brie-leave it… there’s a cheese festival coming to town this March and it’s set to be one of the best yet - better than cheddar before! After a successful Cheese Town in London this winter, the event is ready to take to the North East stage with their unique new cheese festival, Cheese Toon on Friday 16th March 2018. Cheese Toon will take up residence in Times Square and will bring tonnes of cheesy goodness with specialised food trucks, the finest DJs, live bands and interactive entertainment. Expect North East specialities such as the parmo, a northern take on mac ’n cheese and the finest Neapolitan pizzas in Newcastle. We can’t think of a better way to kickstart the St Paddy’s Day weekend celebrations!
