Toon Lunch Club's Top Recommendations for a Family-Friendly Restaurant Week January 17th - 23rd

Last updated:

Have you booked your favourite venues for Restaurant Week yet? Perhaps you're looking to squeeze in one more culinary treat for this January's event. We spoke with Gaia from Toon Lunch Club about her family-friendly go-to's for Restaurant Week this year.

It’s fantastic that Newcastle Restaurant Week is back today after the incredibly tough time the hospitality industry has had recently. It’s always a great opportunity to try out new places in Toon or return to old favourites. We have two small children who love eating out so we’re always on the lookout for family-friendly restaurants. With over 85 restaurants taking part there’s a lot to choose from!

Here are the restaurants we recommend for families this Newcastle Restaurant Week:

Café Andaluz
We LOVE tapas and have visited a couple of branches Café Andaluz (Edinburgh and Aberdeen). They recently opened a Newcastle branch and we can’t wait to check it out. I think that this cuisine is perfect for families because you can get lots of dishes and share them, letting kids try new things. Both our kids are fans of calamari (it’s just basically onion rings to them!) and patatas bravas (chips!). This Restaurant Week deal saves you a good few quid off the usual prices.

What I’d order: Tortilla Esponala - Thick Omelette filled with Sliced Potato and Onion, served with Home-Made Pixto Salsa, Calamares - Classic Crisp-Fried Calamari served with Fresh Lemon and Smoked Paprika Alioli & Chorizo y Butifarra Negra - Sautéed Brindisa Parilla Chorizo Sausage and Black Pudding in a Spicy Tomato sauce.
Offer: Lunch Menu - 3 Tapas for £15 / Dinner Menu - Bread and Olives, 3 Tapas and Dessert for £20

Dobson & Parnell
This beautiful restaurant near the quayside serves up some incredible food and treats everyone like royalty, kids included. We love the décor and vibe of the place, and the locally sourced food is cooked to perfection. There’s no kids menu as such but they will do half portions of anything on menu and our kids loved the fish goujons and chips.

What I’d order: Ham Hock Terrine, Apple Chutney, Toasted Sourdough, Smoked Haddock, Crushed Potatoes, Poached Egg, Parsley Cream (GF), Chocolate Mousse, Cinder Toffee and Banana Crispy Crumble (Ve, GF)
Offer: Enjoy a 3 course lunch for £20, or a 2 course dinner for £20.

Turtle Bay
Another great fun place for kids and adults that serves up tasty food (and cocktails!) is Turtle Bay. Spicy jerk chicken packs a punch and Jamaican curries including curried goat are flavoursome. The kids menu has a good variety of options including burgers, chicken and also healthy options like flatbread, rice and peas.

What I’d order: Jerk Pit Wings - Grilled & Glazed Jerk Gravy or BBQ sauce, Curry Goat - Rich Toasted Spices, Scotch Bonnet Curry Goat, Coconut Rice & Peas
Offer: Enjoy 2 Courses for £15

Umai Mi

I’m lucky enough to work close to Umai Mi’s sister branch and love their sushi bowls so I’ll be checking out their Eldon Square restaurant this Newcastle Restaurant Week. They have a great selection of freshly cooked pan-Asian cuisine and a good value kids menu too (main course like fish & chips or fried rice + ice cream for £4.50).

What I’d order: Salmon Maki - (VEA), Shredded Duck in Udon Noodles (GFA)
Offer: 2 Courses for only £15 or 3 Courses for only £20.

Fat Hippo Underground
If you’re looking for a treat the whole family will love it’s got to be Fat Hippo. The burgers there are insanely good, and the kids menu even has chicken fingers for those that don’t like burgers (like my youngest – she will learn!)  For me it’s got to be the PB and JJ burger which is the best burger I’ve ever had!

What I’d order: Frickles - Fried Crinkle Cut Pickles, Sour Cream and Hellacious Hippo Hot Sauce (Vegan on request), PB & JJ - Double Patty, American Cheese, Chunky Peanut Butter, Bacon Jam and Smoked Chilli Jello
Offer: Enjoy any Draught Soft Drink, Starter and Main for only £15.

Have a great time checking out some new restaurants in Newcastle this week, let us know where you’ve been tagging @newcastlene1 and @toonlunchclub.

Make sure you check the restaurant’s details regarding booking and vouchers before you go, and most of all - enjoy!
