Write on Tap

Write on Tap (WOT) are altering the North East fringe theatre circuit. Their hugely popular new writing showcases present work in development by emerging and established writers, giving audiences a unique chance to shape what the writers do next. On Monday 12th May WOT will present its 6th evening of new plays in 2 years, 35 plays written by 18 writers have been premiered so far, with the next showcase including plays by playwright Mhairi Ledgerwood and leading North East theatre talent Tracy Whitwell (star of TV and last year's Live Theatre Cooking With Elvis revival) for the first time. Conceived by nine graduates of Live Theatre’s Live Writers group, WOT specialises in producing new plays and developing emerging and established playwrights. They produce work that is relevant, surprising, ambitious and playful. Founded in 2012, WOT are a writer led company based in Newcastle upon Tyne run by a core team of writers and theatre directors; Samantha Bell, Steven Blackshaw, Ben Dickenson, Jo McCullock, Stuart Nimmo, Deb Owen and Kim Spence. New plays by first time writers are the lifeblood of WOTs work and audiences love coming to see them. Following a sell out show at The Star & Shadow Cinema in early 2013, WOT launched a new mseason of script-in-hand shows at The Dog & Parrot as part of Alphabetti Spaghetti’s Brolly Season, now they are back with another night of short plays by six writers. Each event in the WOT programme is themed and on Monday 12th May at 8pm they explore debt in all its forms with ‘These Are The Debts We Owe’ - six script-in-hand performances of plays by the region’s most exciting new playwrights. The six plays will be produced by the best emerging actors and directors in the North East, who will join audience and writers for a lively discussion in the bar afterwards. It’s a great opportunity to see work in development, influence its future progression and support some of the region’s finest new talent. The Debts We Owe plays are: How D’ya Like Them Apples (by Sam Bell), Custard (by Mhairi Legerwood), Cow Juice (by Chris Wilkins), Reaper (by Kim Spence), Birds Without Wings (by Ben Dickenson), No Kardashian For Norman (by Tracy Whitwell). The Debts We Owe actors include: James Barton, Howard Dickenson, Amy Louise Foley, Chris Foley, Zoe Hakin, James Hedley, Caroline Liversidge, Robert Nicholson, Cherry Nixon, Alexandra Tahnee, Heather Louise Carrol, Michael Blair, Pip Chamberlin, Vanessa Karon and George Phillip Williams. The Debts We Owe directors include: Ben Dickenson and Melanie Rashbrooke. The performances are followed by lively discussions with the writers, directors and actors in the bar afterwards. It’s a great opportunity to see work at an early stage in its development and help influence its future progression.
