Plenty on Offer for City's Vegan Visitors

AN AWARD-WINNING Newcastle bar has extended its inclusive menu to cater for its vegan visitors.

City Tavern at Northumberland Road, Newcastle has expanded its food offering to create a range of starters and mains for its guests with special dietary requirements.

The bar’s menu, which already includes dairy, gluten, vegetarian and wheat free options, was put through its paces during Newcastle Restaurant Week, when it introduced a range of trial vegan options to its specially-crafted Restaurant Week menu.

And the city’s vegan visitors were so impressed with the new food choices, they have now been added to City Tavern’s everyday menu.

Among the vegan dishes, which featured on the Restaurant Week menu, were cantaloupe, strawberry, feta – which can be swapped for vegan feta - and basil salad, served with balsamic dressing and a Moroccan chickpea stew served with giant couscous and flatbread.

City Tavern owner, David King, said he was delighted with the feedback.

“We recognise that there is a huge demand for vegan dining and this was clear in the positive feedback we received during Restaurant Week.

“The vegan feta cheese was a huge hit and we heard from many families how it was great to be able to dine out together, rather than feeling the need to locate the nearest specialist vegan restaurant, or simply stay in.”

He added: “Customers were also surprised when they found out that they could enjoy a range of vegan meals on our main menu once Restaurant Week was over.”

The current vegan options on offer at City Tavern, which are subject to seasonal change, include veggie steak and ale pie, made with soya protein steak pieces with the bar’s hand pulled ale, vegetables and a vegan puff pastry lid, an aromatic Thai green curry with Asian vegetables and sticky rice, and a Mexican bean pot dish served with spicy salsa.

Sara Dickson, general manager at City Tavern was pleased to see the success of the dishes, having had a vested interest in incorporating vegan options into the menu herself.

“Being a vegan, I know what it’s like visiting restaurants and having so little choice – so I think it’s important for us at City Tavern to build a menu that provides something for everyone.

“And don’t worry fellow vegans, we’re working on the desserts menu as we speak…”

The state-of-the-art bar, widely recognised for its Tudor style façade, also serves a range of dishes for meat-eaters, including 10oz aged Northumberland rib eye steak, steamed mussels in classic white wine and cream with chunky bread and an American classic grilled sandwich with the bar's very own five-day brined beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and homemade Russian dressing, served in toasted sourdough.

City Tavern was taken over by Mr King early in 2014 and then enjoyed a £450k refurbishment to create a state-of-the-art bar while still retaining the venue’s historic features.
