Pilgrim Street Welcomes Charles Dickens's Ghosts this Christmas

Pilgrim Street is set to come alive with the enchanting spirit of Charles Dickens' timeless classic, "A Christmas Carol," for the second consecutive year.

The Dickens by Candlelight team is thrilled to present a brand new adaptation of this heartwarming tale at Alderman Fenwick's House, a Grade 1 listed building dating back to the 17th century. This historic Pilgrim Street merchant's house, one of the city's oldest structures, boasts a rich history, including a period when it served as the Queen's Head Hotel.

The inaugural show last year was a resounding success, selling out to a captivated audience. This year, the excitement is building as over 60% of tickets for the 24 performances have already been booked.

Under the artistic direction of the award-winning Jake Murray, known for his exceptional work in productions such as "Haddock & Chips”, "The Rievers”, and “Macbeth", this fresh adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" will once again be set in the spectacular Great Room of Alderman Fenwick's House. The Great Room, formerly the hotel's restaurant and saloon, holds historical significance as Charles Dickens himself was a resident of the building during his visits to the city, where he frequently performed readings at music halls and theatres. Dickens' connection to Newcastle runs deep, including his marriage to Catherine Hogarth, whose father was the editor of the Newcastle Chronicle.

The event, titled "Dickens by Candlelight: 'A Christmas Carol”, is scheduled to run from December 1st to December 24th. It has been expertly adapted by Craig Wilde, who has skilfully breathed new life into this beloved story.

Craig Wilde Writer and Co-Producer with Heather Mathews of Northeast Producers, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming performances: "Tickets are selling very well as I think it’s really captured the imagination of the public. They will be able to sit in the same room that Dickens himself sat in more than 150 years ago and hear and see his work being performed. The play featured the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future, and this experience will take the audience back in time to everyone’s perfect image of Christmas."

Tickets for "Dickens by Candlelight: 'A Christmas Carol'" are priced at £29.50 and £24.50 (plus booking fees) for concessions. Performances are scheduled from December 1st to December 24th. Tickets can be purchased at www.niltoni.com/box-office
