The North East's Biggest and Best 10k, the Great North 10k, Returns Sunday, 6 July

The countdown is on to the AJ Bell Great North 10k, with just over two weeks to go and fewer than 500 places remaining, now’s the time to claim your spot at the North East’s biggest and best 10k summer running event.

This year’s event is set to be the biggest staging yet with 10,000 runners and a new and improved route, which has everything our runners loved last year, including the iconic Tyne Bridge and city centre landmarks, and new start and finish line on Great North Road.

Anna Thompson, Event Manager and Race Director for the AJ Bell Great North 10k, said: “We’re excited to be back with the popular City Centre route for the third year, and our biggest to date, with 10,000 runners joining us.

“The atmosphere is fantastic and really helps build the excitement in the lead up to the Great North Run, which takes place on Sunday, 7 September.

“Many people use the Great North 10k as a training opportunity ahead of the Great North Run, while anyone who missed a Great North Run place will enjoy getting the opportunity to run across the Tyne Bridge twice.

“The 10k city centre route showcases some of the most legendary sights in Newcastle and we’re pleased to offer a new start and finish line this year on the Great North Road.”

This year we’re once again partnering with the Newcastle United Foundation. The Foundation is committed to helping people be more active, and feel happier and healthier through sports and well-being programmes across the North East. There will be a black and white wave on the day, with NUF runners wearing a black and white striped run number in the clubs’ colours. The wave is open to all runners who want to show their support for The Foundation, simply select that you would like to join the wave when signing up.

The Great North 10k is powered by thousands of spectators, energising music zones and lively charity cheer points. As you reach the final stretch, a live DJ will bring the party to the finish line, creating a buzzing atmosphere to celebrate your achievement. And to top it all off, every finisher will receive an exclusive medal and event t-shirt – perfect for showing off your summer running success.

Introducing your 2025 AJ Bell Great North 10k medal – a striking celebration of Newcastle’s most iconic landmarks.

This year’s design proudly features:

  • Tyne Bridge – A symbol of the North East, and one you’ll cross not once, but twice on race day.
  • Grey’s Monument – Towering 130 feet high in the heart of the city, you’ll pass this historic column as part of your 10k journey.
  • Great North Museum: Hancock – A much-loved family attraction, and one of the many landmarks lining your route this July.

These three sights capture the spirit, strength and story of the city – and now, they’re captured forever in a medal that reflects the pride and passion of every runner who takes on the Toon.

Whether you're chasing a new personal best, fundraising for a cause close to your heart, or just want to do something unforgettable this summer, this is a run for everyone – all ages, all abilities, all welcome.
