Newcastle Theatre Royal Announces Spectacular New Season of Drama, Dance and Musical Theatre

Newcastle Theatre Royal has announced an exciting new season of drama, dance and musical theatre, bringing internationally acclaimed productions, award-winning musicals and beloved adaptations to the North East throughout 2027.

Reginald Rose's gripping courtroom thriller Twelve Angry Men (Tue 16 – Sat 20 Feb 2027), based on the classic 1957 film, is widely regarded as one of cinema's greatest courtroom dramas. The story transforms what appears to be an open-and-shut case into a tense examination of justice, prejudice and reasonable doubt. The production stars Gray O'Brien (Coronation Street, Peak Practice), Bill Ward (Emmerdale, Coronation Street), Ricky Norwood (EastEnders), Tristan Gemmill (Casualty, Coronation Street) and Ben Nealon (Soldier Soldier).

Dance audiences can look forward to the return of the electrifying São Paulo Dance Company (Tue 2 & Wed 3 Mar 2027), making its highly anticipated second UK tour. Following a hugely successful debut visit, the company brings a thrilling fusion of athleticism, precision and emotional intensity, showcasing the very best of contemporary Brazilian dance.

Musical theatre takes centre stage with the arrival of the record-breaking West End production of Jesus Christ Superstar (Tue 16 – Sat 27 Mar 2027). Starring Sam Ryder as Jesus, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's celebrated rock opera follows the final days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Judas, featuring iconic songs including I Don't Know How to Love Him, Gethsemane and Superstar.

Following closely behind is one of the world's most enduring and successful musicals, Chicago (Mon 29 Mar – Sat 3 Apr 2027). Set amidst glamour and corruption, the story follows aspiring performer Roxie Hart as she manipulates the media, the public and the legal system in a bid to escape conviction. Packed with unforgettable songs, Chicago remains as entertaining today as ever.

Summer brings the acclaimed musical phenomenon Hadestown (Tue 1 – Sat 5 Jun 2027). This deeply resonant and hopeful production intertwines the ancient Greek myths of Orpheus and Eurydice, and Hades and Persephone, creating an unforgettable journey to the underworld and back. A global award-winning success, Hadestown continues to captivate audiences around the world with its powerful storytelling and distinctive score.

The season also features a powerful new dance production - Rambert's It's a Sin (Tue 29 Jun – Sat 3 Jul 2027), directed and choreographed by Artistic Director Benoit Swan Pouffer, draws inspiration from Russell T Davies' award-winning Channel 4 series. Set against the backdrop of 1980s London and the unfolding AIDS crisis, the production is a moving story of friendship, love, resilience and survival, told through Rambert's signature contemporary dance style.

And finally, Midsomer Murders: The Killings at Badger’s Drift (Tue 27 – Sat 31 Jul 2027), is bringing the beloved television phenomenon to the stage. When a woman is found dead in the seemingly idyllic village of Badger's Drift, DCI Tom Barnaby and Sergeant Gavin Troy uncover a web of secrets, rivalries and hidden motives. Featuring all the wit, charm and suspense that have made the series a global favourite, the production stars Daniel Casey, who originated the role of Sergeant Troy on television, returning to Midsomer County as Inspector Tom Barnaby.

Marianne Locatori, Chief Executive of Newcastle Theatre Royal, said: "This season reflects the breadth and quality of work we are proud to bring to audiences in the North East.
