Newcastle Gets Ready to Switch on Christmas in Style

Newcastle City Council is inviting everyone to join the celebrations as the city’s Christmas Lights Switch-On returns on Thursday 12 November, with Hits Radio 90s favourites Steve and Karen bringing their trademark energy, laughs and entertainment to the heart of the city.

One of Newcastle’s best-loved traditions, the free event will see the city centre light up as Newcastle officially kicks off the Christmas season.

Hosted by Steve and Karen, the evening promises live music, festive games, panto fun, special guests and plenty of surprises, with the possibility of a special appearance from a certain man in a red suit!

Entertainment gets underway at 6pm at the top of Grey Street, near Grey’s Monument, before the big moment at 7pm when Newcastle’s Christmas lights are switched on.

Cllr Rob Austin, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Youth Services at Newcastle City Council, said: “There’s nothing quite like Christmas in Newcastle, and our lights switch-on is the perfect way to get the celebrations started.

“Steve and Karen bring fantastic energy and a real sense of fun, helping make this a brilliant night out for families, friends and people of all ages. Add in the music, entertainment and that special moment when the lights come on, and you’ve got all the ingredients for a great Newcastle celebration.

“We want people to come along, get involved and enjoy being part of the occasion. It’s about bringing our communities together and celebrating everything that makes Newcastle such a warm and welcoming city.

“And this is just the start. There’s plenty more to look forward to, from the return of our Christmas Market and the Christmas Village on Old Eldon Square to events and activities across the city.”

Ben Whitfield, Director of Communications at NE1 added: “Lighting up the city is a much-loved Christmas tradition that marks another ramping up of the seasonal celebrations and builds excitement for all the festive fun that’s to come in the heart of the city.

“We can’t wait to welcome back Newcastle’s Christmas Market and Christmas Village, the North Pole Igloos at the Monument, and all the fabulous seasonal activities at Old Eldon Square.

“The ceremonial switch-on is always a magical event, with local favourites Steve and Karen leading the all-important countdown. To get into the festive spirit and ready for a fun-filled Christmas, join us on Grey Street to celebrate.”

Residents and visitors are encouraged to arrive early to enjoy the entertainment and find a good viewing spot ahead of the switch-on.
