Newcastle is getting ready for a festive celebration with a difference as Northumbria University hosts a Christmas Makers Market and Christmas Light Switch On on Tuesday 17 November, bringing a little Christmas magic to the heart of the city.

This free city-centre event will bring together independent makers, local street food traders, live entertainment and even festive little donkeys bringing extra Christmas cuteness, on Tuesday 17 November.

Christmas Light Switch On celebrations

Visitors can expect an afternoon packed with festive entertainment, independent shopping and delicious food and drink, with something for all ages to enjoy, with local legends Steve & Karen taking centre stage to switch on the Christmas lights between at 4pm.

The outdoor celebrations will run from 2pm to 6pm and will feature live singers, little donkeys, student competitions and a line-up of local food traders serving up plenty of seasonal street food. Visitors can tuck into offerings from popular local names including Daveys, Loaded Dogs, Weird Dough, Deep North, Filto and more, bringing a taste of the North East’s independent food scene to campus.

NEW Indoor Makers Market for 2026

Starting earlier at 12pm, a new addition to the annual event, the Makers Market, which will be held in the Sport Central Atrium, will offer the perfect opportunity to get ahead with Christmas shopping while supporting local independent businesses. A variety of craft traders will be showcasing unique handmade products, thoughtful gifts and one-of-a-kind finds, ideal for anyone looking to give something a little different this Christmas.

Visitors can make a full afternoon of it, browsing the market, enjoying festive food and entertainment, and joining the crowds for a special seasonal moment with two of Newcastle’s best-known local personalities.

Working alongside Urban Park Market, the event is part of Northumbria University’s, and their catering partner Chartwells, commitment to bringing people together and celebrating the creativity, talent and independent businesses that make the North East such a special place to live, work and study.

Everyone is welcome, with free entry for students, staff, local residents, families and visitors to the city.
