Muzoon al-Mellahan to speak at Newcastle University Students’ Union

Syrian refugee and BBC Top 100 Woman Muzoon al-Mellahan is to speak at Newcastle University Students’ Union (NUSU) on Saturday 6th March as part of the organisation’s annual Inspiring Women conference. Dubbed the ‘Syrian Malala’, Muzoon and her family now live in Newcastle, having settled in the UK in December 2015 after nearly three years since fleeing war-torn Syria. Event organiser Kay Hattam said: “We are delighted to welcome Muzoon and all of our guest speakers to our second ever Inspiring Women conference at NUSU. “We’re really proud to welcome such a wide range of guest speakers and we know that their inspiring and thought provoking stories will encourage our attendees and inspire them to reach their full potential, in every aspect of life.” The annual Inspiring Women conference aims to inspire attendees to seek to achieve their full potential and their ambitions and become inspiring women themselves. Other Keynote speakers and contributors include TV presenter and Women’s Rights campaigner Charlie Webster and inspirational Northumberland speaker Penni Blythe. Throughout the day there will be speeches and a panel discussion, as well as workshops such as ‘Who is your Inspiration?’, ‘Body Image’ and ‘The Global Graduate’ which will examine what makes a graduate ‘global’ and identify the skills and attributes employers are looking for. Kay continued: “This event is open to all women, regardless of being a student as there will be many aspects to the day that will resonate with women of all ages. “This year we are focusing on ‘Global Women’ in a way to emphasise the significant role and impact that women make to the economic, cultural and social wellbeing of their community in every part of the world.” For more information and to book a space on the Inspiring Women conference go to www.nusu.co.uk/inspire
