DPP Planning Appoints James Thomas as Senior Planner at Newcastle office

DPP Planning, one of the UK’s leading independent planning consultancies, has announced the appointment of James Thomas as a Senior Planner in its Newcastle office.

James studied urban planning at Middle Tennessee State University, before completing a master’s degree in the subject at Newcastle University. He also has an undergraduate degree in Human Geography.

Since then, James has worked on a breadth of planning projects across the North East in both the public and private sectors. This includes working as an Assistant Project Manager at Newcastle Cathedral, a position he picked up through the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Most recently, he was a Planning Consultant for Cundall, where he worked on countless projects across the region, including St Michael's Church in Byker - a derelict Grade II* listed church which he helped turn into a vibrant community hub. The project went on to gain national recognition, with the church being removed from Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register, helping to secure its long-term future.

James said of his appointment: “I’m really excited to be joining DPP’s Newcastle office. The team here are very talented and knowledgeable so having the chance to work alongside them is fantastic.

“DPP work on some big projects that have really made a positive difference across the North East. I’m lucky enough to have been involved in a range of schemes across the region already, so working with DPP is going to give me the chance to support even more exciting projects that could help the area grow and prosper. I can’t wait to get started.”

Gareth Hooper, CEO at DPP said: “We’re delighted to welcome James on to our Newcastle team. His experience and expertise are clear for all to see and, thanks to his involvement in local projects across the region, he has a great understanding of the area’s planning context, which is going to make him a very valuable asset to us.

“This appointment again highlights DPP’s status as one of the most attractive consultancies for the industry’s top talent, as well as underlining our commitment to investing in the region’s most promising prospects. Once again, welcome on board James, we can’t wait to see what you achieve with us.”
