International expert in medical education visits Northumbria

One of the world’s leading experts in medical and health professions education will present a series of public lectures at Northumbria University, Newcastle later this month. Professor Cees Van der Vleuten is world renowned as one of today's most respected professionals in the field of health science education. He recently accepted a position as a visiting lecturer at Northumbria and will commence his tenure with two presentations during his inaugural visit to the University. Professor Van der Vleuten is Chair of the Department of Educational Development and Research at Maastricht University. He has made significant contributions to research in evaluation and assessment of professional medical competence as well as problem-based learning, work-based learning and the development of educational theories in the field. In 2010 he received a Dutch royal decoration for the societal impact of his work and in 2012 the Karolinska Prize for Research in Medical Education. Professor Van der Vleuten’s lectures will address a number of important areas facing educationalists and healthcare professionals in the UK today at two seperate lectures: • 30 January, 11am - The Assessment of Professional Competence: Lessons Learned from Development and Research, Great Hall, City Campus. • 31 January, 10:30am - Effective Learning Strategies and implications for Practice: What Happens when We Take Evidence in Education Seriously? Great Hall, City Campus. Professor Van der Vleuten mentored Professor of Professional Education for Health and Life Sciences at Northumbria, Linda Prescott-Clements, for her PhD. Prof. Prescott-Clements,  said: “To have Professor Van der Vleuten as a visiting lecturer at Northumbria is a huge endorsement for our University." The lectures are open to staff, students, visitors and members of the public and each event will include networking opportunities. As demand for these lectures is expected to be high, spaces are limited. Please email [email protected] as soon as possible if you would like to attend.
