Hen-credible! Newcastle’s Fat Hippo Makes PETA Top 10 List for Best Vegan Chicken
With demand for vegan food surging, PETA is naming its Top Ten Vegan Chicken Picks in the UK that are delivering bold, delicious flavour without harming a feather on anyone’s head. Founded in Newcastle and now across the UK, Fat Hippo has made the list for its Notorious VFC 2.0 – an unbeatable burger featuring a southern-fried-style plant-powered fillet stacked with waffle fries, vegan cheese, pickles, BBQ sauce, and zinger mayo.
“From saucy burgers to crispy vegan tenders, every winner on PETA’s list is serving up seriously satisfying vegan chicken that’s full of flavour and free from suffering,” says PETA Vice President of Vegan Corporate Projects Dawn Carr. “PETA is encouraging everyone to leave birds in peace, not pieces, by ordering delicious, kind meals that rule the roost.”
PETA’s other picks for the best bird-free bites come from Yard & Coop in Manchester, Hank’s Vegan Restaurant in Ipswich, TastyMK in Milton Keynes, and Chicken George in Bedford, Hitchin and St Albans. Rounding out the list are picks from Bloc+ in Glasgow, The Bok Shop in Brighton and Horsham, Chicken & Blues in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, and Miss Millie's and 7bone, which have sites across the south of England.
Chickens form complex social structures, dream when they sleep, and worry about the future – but in the meat industry, they’re crammed into sheds by the tens of thousands and bred to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At the abattoir, they’re shackled upside down, their throats are slit, and they’re scalded in defeathering tanks – sometimes while still conscious. PETA’s free vegan starter kit can help anyone looking to make the switch.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – notes that major chicken chains, including KFC, Burger King, and Nando’s, offer vegan chicken nationwide, making kind choices easier than ever, and points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a chicken is a dog is a boy.
