‘Harrigan’ is policing his way into a cinema near you

North East, independent movie Harrigan is coming to a cinema near you from September 2013. Filmed in Newcastle and around the region, this crime-based movie features a number of well known TV and stage stars. Premiering at Durham Gala Theatre and Cinema on September 16, the film will hit regional screens from September 20 – including Tyneside Cinema. Written by local author Arthur McKenzie, a former police officer, the story is based around actual events that took place in the authors’ policing career and many of the characters are based on real people. The story follows Detective Sergeant Barry Harrigan in 1974, when power cuts and miners strikes cripple the country. The role is played by TV and stage star Stephen Tompkinson, known for roles in DCI Banks and Wild at Heart. Amongst the desperation and fear growing in a crime ridden estate in Northern England, one man becomes embroiled into saving community life. Returning from a secondment in Hong Kong ‘Harrigan’ rejoins the police force and quickly realises the chaos is spreading like a disease. Taking matters into his own hands he faces a local gang led by the formidable Dunstan. When news carries that his friend and former colleague is beaten to death by his enemies, Harrigan’s mission for justice becomes personal. The movie has been produced by Newcastle-based production company, Tall Tree Pictures and is directed by local man Vince Woods. A Q&A screening with Stephen Tompkinson & Arthur McKenzie will take place at Tyneside Cinema.
