Grainger Market Trader Visits Downing Street to Champion North East Small Businesses

A Grainger Market trader has taken a trip to Downing Street this week, proudly representing female entrepreneurs from the North East.

Tian Tang, owner of Tian’s Gifts, travelled to London on Wednesday 25th March following an invitation from Chancellor Rachel Reeves. During her visit, she showcased a selection of her handmade and homemade products - a proud moment not just for Tian, but for the community of independent businesses she’s part of.

Tian opened her shop in Grainger Market six years ago and has been an integral part of the market ever since. Today, she trades alongside more than 80 independent businesses, from traditional produce traders to street food favourites and creative retail stalls - including a number of award-winning names such as Dumpling and Bun and Acropolis.

For many traders, Grainger Market is where their journey begins, offering a first step into a brick-and-mortar space, surrounded by a supportive community, loyal customers and high footfall.

Over the years, Tian has become a real champion for her fellow traders and small businesses across the region. Her hard work and passion have earned her national recognition, including being named a finalist in the Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards, being selected for the #SmallBiz100 campaign, and receiving an invitation to the House of Lords.

Speaking after the visit, Tian said: “It honestly feels surreal to have been invited to Downing Street. I’m so proud to represent not just my own business, but all of the amazing small businesses we have here in the North East. We work so hard behind the scenes, so to have the recognition means everything.

“The Grainger Market has been a huge part of my journey. The support from fellow traders and customers has helped me grow over the years, so being able to take a small piece of that to London was really special."
