Folkworks: Emily Portman Trio

Folkworks: Emily Portman Trio Sage Gateshead Sunday 28 June, 8pm Newcastle University’s graduate, Emily Portman, released her latest album Coracle yesterday (22 June 2015), just days into her most recent tour which includes a date at Sage Gateshead this Sunday (28 June) with the Emily Portman Trio. Emily will perform live alongside the talented musicians Lucy Farrell (voice, viola and saw) and Rachel Newton (voice, harp and fiddle) as part of the Emily Portman Trio. Lucy and Rachel are highly sought-after soloists in their own right and are also graduates of Newcastle University’s Folk and Traditional degree course. Together they captivate audiences throughout Europe. 2013 holder of the ‘BBC Radio Two Folk Award for Best Original Song’, Emily is fast becoming a top name in the UK folk scene, sharing stages with folk legends including Martin Simpson and Waterson:Carthy. Not only has Emily’s music propelled her onto the front cover of fRoots, she has received widespread international radio-play, reached MOJO’s top ten album lists and tours extensively. Delving into the treasure trove of British folklore, the acclaimed folk singer songwriter explores recurring and mutating themes in tales of family life and death. The tension between the magical and the everyday runs throughout. The concert starts at 8pm in Sage Two at Sage Gateshead on Sunday 28 June. Tickets available from sagegateshead.com / 0191 443 4661 and cost £10 - £12.
