Exciting Schedule Announced for NE1’s Screen on the Green
There’s less than two weeks to go before the curtain opens on the main feature at NE1’s Screen on the Green. Over 100 free movies are packed into the six-week movie schedule which has just been unveiled.
NE1’s multi-award-winning Screen on the Green returned to its signature position at Old Eldon Square in Newcastle on Monday 29th June and will remain in place until Bank Holiday Monday, 31st August, an extended treat for the city. For the second year running NE1’s Screen on the Green is partnering with botanically brewed soft drinks brand Fentimans to bring a new dimension and additional themed activities to Old Eldon Square.
Audiences have already enjoyed a week of Wimbledon on the big open-air screen and this week’s screenings will be devoted to the final week of the tennis championships before handing over to the movies which begin in earnest on Monday 20th July.
Over 100 free films are packed into Screen on the Green’s six-week movie schedule with at least two films every day, at 12pm and 3pm throughout the summer holidays.
Tuesdays will feature a special Toddler Takeover screening at 10.30am, showcasing a selection of short films from Julia Donaldson, the renowned children’s author. Young audiences will enjoy favourites like Stick Man alongside newer releases The Scarecrow’s Wedding and Tabby McTat before the main event, the daily film programme begins.
Wednesdays have the added bonus of an evening screening when the team at Tyneside Cinema will curate a special 6pm screening. The independent cinema specialists have brought their expertise to create a selected mix of cult classics, critically acclaimed favourites and hidden gems, with a line-up that will include Labyrinth, Robot Dreams, and other must-see movies.
Blockbuster Thursdays are also back with the year’s biggest hits to be enjoyed by the post-work crowd. Smash hits like Avatar: Fire and Ash and Jurassic World Rebirth will have city workers rushing to grab a deckchair. This year, Thursdays will also enjoy a new musical twist with screenings of monumental music legends. Fans of the Boss, Bruce Springsteen, and the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley, will be in for a treat as their stories take to the big screen at Screen on the Green for the first time.
On 30 August, the final Sunday of the event, the public's choice takes centre stage. Following a public campaign inviting film recommendations, audiences voted for Scooby-Doo: Spooky Island, which will be screened at 12pm, followed by Mamma Mia! at 3pm.

Before the main movie programme begins, NE1 has planned a week-long interlude between the Wimbledon Championships and the full Screen on the Green movie schedule, with something for everyone to enjoy.
From 13th – 19th July screenings will begin at 10am with popular pre-school favourites including Bluey and In the Night Garden. At 11am, audiences will enjoy a selection of timeless classics including the likes of Singin' in the Rain and Roman Holiday. And, at 2pm, a daily episode of the epic Blue Planet documentary series will draw in nature-loving crowds.
On Wednesday 15th July the Screen on the Green programme will take on a different tone, when NE1 partners with the Joint Ex-Servicemen’s Association of the North East to host a special commemorative event marking what would have been Queen Elizabeth’s 100th birthday year. As part of the event a special screening of the documentary Queen Elizabeth II: Her Story, Our Century will be held.
