My Delhi named Best Restaurant in Newcastle at the British Restaurant Awards 2026

My Delhi has been named “Best Restaurant in Newcastle 2026” at the British Restaurant Awards, marking a major milestone for the restaurant seven years after opening its first doors in the city.

The award was announced at the British Restaurant Awards ceremony in London on 14 September, with My Delhi taking the title from a shortlist of ten leading Newcastle restaurants.

Among the finalists were some of the city’s most highly regarded restaurants, including Michelin-starred names, making the recognition particularly significant for an independent business that began with a single restaurant in Newcastle in 2019.

Elahi Shah Amin, Director of My Delhi, said:

“Newcastle is where My Delhi began, so to be named Best Restaurant in the city seven years later is incredibly special.

“We were shortlisted alongside some of the finest restaurants in Newcastle, that we have enormous respect for. To be recognised amongst businesses of that calibre is something we are incredibly proud of.

“But more than anything, I’m proud of our team. Restaurants are built service by service, table by table, and it is the consistency, care and hard work behind the scenes that makes moments like this possible.

“Newcastle was our starting point. We’ve grown considerably since then, but this restaurant will always have a special place in our story. And as we continue to grow, our responsibility is to keep raising the standard. Growth only means something if we keep getting better.”

The award comes during a significant period of growth for My Delhi.

The business has expanded into Sunderland and Leicester, while 2026 saw its first acquisition, as they took over renowned Birmingham restaurant “Itihaas”. And they’re not stopping there. In 2027, we’ll see them opening the flagship My Delhi restaurant in Leeds city centre.

The latest award win adds to a growing list of national recognition for My Delhi, including the BBC’s Best British Takeaway in 2022, the Lee Kum Kee Ultimate Umami Champion title at the Street Food Championships in 2024, inclusion in the 2025 British Curry Guide and Best Street Food in Britain at the Asian Restaurant and Takeaway Awards in 2025.

For My Delhi, the latest recognition brings the story back to where it all began: Newcastle. 

Seven years after opening its first restaurant in the city, My Delhi can now call itself the Best Restaurant in Newcastle.
