CELEBRATE WEDDED BLISS AT DISCOVERY MUSEUM …

ONE of the North East’s most exciting wedding venues is staging a special exhibition celebrating ceremonies through the decades. Discovery Museum, at Blandford Square, Newcastle, home to historic, record-breaking steamship Turbinia, is an increasingly popular choice with bridal couples in search of a unique venue in which to tie the knot. Not only does its Great Hall provide an impressive location for wedding ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and evening receptions but its Turbinia Gallery, Science Maze and Cafe are also licensed for civil ceremonies. Now, the museum is celebrating all things matrimonial with its Something Old, Something New exhibition – providing an insight into the different customs and traditions followed by people from all cultures as they embark on married life. Wedding apparel from the past century will be a highlight of the display, as will items from the 2011 BBC3 Don’t Tell the Bride science fiction-themed wedding programme, which was filmed at the museum. The exhibition also features a selection of wedding dresses from the Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums collections, along with photographs and memorabilia from weddings throughout the last 100 years. Themes explored include the planning for the big day, marriages within different religions, tradition and custom, family and love and romance. Samantha Doyle, sales and marketing manager for Sodexo Prestige, which manages catering and events at the venue, said: “It’s highly appropriate that the museum, which is such a popular choice for today’s bridal couples, is putting on this display of weddings from years gone by. “Aside from its central location and strong regional identity, one of the reasons Discovery Museum is such a popular wedding venue is that it combines a traditional, historic setting with up to the minute catering and event facilities – very much a case of something old and something new. The Something Old, Something New exhibition will be on show until 12 January 2014. For further information about weddings at Discovery Museum, call 0844 856 1074 or e-mail [email protected].
