Buttons and Bows and Back West: Tyneside Irish Centre

This Event has passed

Some of the most highly revered musicians in Ireland will demonstrate their absolute class in Buttons and Bows and the thrilling agility of the playing and dancing of Back West on 19th October 2018 at the Tyneside Irish Centre.

Buttons and Bows

The words ‘Button Accordion’ and ‘Jackie Daly’ are synonymous in the world of Irish traditional music. Described in the New York Times as “probably the best accordionist in Ireland”. Jackie was a central figure in some of the most influential groups playing Irish music in recent times. His performances with bands such as DeDanann, Patrick Street, Buttons and Bows, Arcady, Reel Union and Kinvara all attest to his wonderful musicianship and versatility.

Manus McGuire is best known for his wonderfully rhythmic fiddle-playing, his “lifting” Sligo style and his remarkable repertoire of fiddle music from Ireland, Shetland, Canada and beyond.

Séamus McGuire has been recognized for many years as one of Ireland’s most versatile fiddle-players, equally at home in his traditonal band Buttons and Bows as he is in the more classical format of The West Ocean String Quartet.

Garry O'Briain has been a member of a number of landmark Irish music ensembles, including Skylark and Buttons and Bows, and is a member of the legendary Scottish-Irish band, The Boys of the Lough. His list of recordings as a session player is extensive; he has written music for stage, film and television, as well as over a hundred songs.

Their latest album "Green Grass Blue Grass", was recorded in Nashville with special guest, fourteen-time Grammy award winner, Ricky Skaggs.

Back West, are the full Irish: a four piece of young exponents, filled to the brim with the music and soul of the west of Ireland, three members were reared in the heart of Galway city. Their stage show is a winning combination of traditional, sassy, modern, and technically perfect, delivered with tremendous and rampant energy.

The highly regarded and awe inspiring musical siblings, Maureen (Eddi Reader, Mairtin O'Connor) and Brendan Browne (Riverdance band), on fiddle and accordion respectively, join Peter Vickers (dancer with Lord of the Dance) on hand and foot percussion and P.J. McDonald (Arty McGlynn, Cathal Hayden) on vocals, guitar, whistles and chat.
