Newcastles Tyneside Cinema is delighted to present Crossing Cultures, a week of new French, German and Spanish language films between Sunday 23 and Sunday 30 June 2013. The first event of its kind in the North East, Crossing Cultures will give audiences the chance to see some of the finest foreign language films from around the world fresh from the Toronto, Venice, and San Sebastián Film Festivals, all of which have not yet been released in the UK. Crossing Cultures begins on Sunday 23 June with the multi-award-winning Spanish silent film Blancanieves (12A) and a live performance from Edinburghs acclaimed flamenco collective Alba Flamenca, presented as part of ¡VAMOS! Festival. A sophisticated tribute to the golden age of European cinema, Blancanieves is an imaginative retelling of the story of Snow White set in 1920s Spain, where a young bullfighter must escape from her evil stepmother and seeks refuge with a troupe of matador dwarves. The film programme will offer something for both language learners and fans of world cinema, and audiences are invited to take part in three special Language Cafés in French, German and Spanish after selected screenings, when they can enjoy a drink and an informal chat in the language featured in the film. Language Cafés will take place on Wednesday 26 June after French comedy Tango Libre (15*), on Friday 28 June after German drama Kaddish For A Friend (12A*) and on Sunday 30 June after Crossing Cultures closing film, the Spanish language thriller 7 Boxes (15*). Other programme highlights include apocalyptic Spanish thriller The End (15*) and moving German language drama Winters Daughter (12A*). The programme also features two family films, with the award-winning animated tale Ernest & Celestine (U) in French, and the magical tale of A Horse On The Balcony (PG*) in German. All the films in the Crossing Cultures programme have English subtitles. Jonny Tull, Cinema Programme Manager for Tyneside Cinema said, Were thrilled to present Crossing Cultures at Tyneside Cinema, and to give audiences in the North East the chance to see some of the finest foreign language films from the worlds greatest film festivals. Many of these films dont have a UK release planned, so Crossing Cultures may be your only chance to see them on the big screen!
