The Form and Function of Phallic Imagery Along Hadrian’s Wall
The phallus was a frequent, perhaps even prominent symbol encountered throughout the Roman Empire. Hadrian's Wall was no exception to this rule, with a number of stones bearing phallic carvings found along its impressive length. The paper offers a review and assessment of phallic imagery on stones from the Wall, providing a new typology and further thoughts on literal and metaphysical notions of frontier security.
