All the magical adventure of J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy classic will come to life in this screening of director Ralph Bakshi’s animated tale of the enchanted land of Middle-earth.
When a dangerous and powerful gold ring falls into his hands, courageous Hobbit Frodo embarks on an epic journey. Along with the mighty Wizard Gandalf and some daring Elves, he defends his homeland from the Dark Power that would destroy it.
Part of Newcastle Castle’s Swords & Sorcery month, this rare screening of the ambitious 1978 film takes place in the run-up to Time and Tide Events' Tolkien Weekend 2016.
While nowadays overshadowed by Peter Jackson’s live action trilogy, Bakshi’s striking interpretation represented a bold attempt at bringing to life an epic story that had previously been thought of as unfilmable.
