Investigating Sherlock: The Life & Times of Basil Rathbone: Newcastle Castle
This Event has passed
Sherlock Holmes is one of the most famous fictional characters of all time, and to many Basil Rathbone is the definitive version of the Great Detective. The fourteen films he starred in, readily available on DVD and often shown on TV, have produced generations of fans.
Decades before the BBC series Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, Rathbone’s Holmes transferred the character effectively to a modern setting – allowing the films to highlight the ongoing war in Europe.
Join Mark Iveson, author of Cursed Horror Stars, as he discusses Rathbone’s career, with a particular emphasis on the actor’s portrayal of Holmes and also, in addition, his position as one of the most stylish screen villains of all time. This talk takes place in the Black Gate at Newcastle Castle which is fully accessible to wheelchair users.
