Robots: Hopes and Fears: Life Science Centre
This Event has passedWill robots ultimately change our lives for better or for worse? Listen to the debate on Thursday 1st November 2018 at the Centre for Life in Newcastle.
We have all been told that robots can improve healthcare and wellbeing: robotic surgeons are already being used in highly intricate operations. In our aging society, robots could help to care for the elderly with humanoid carers and many people unable to drive for health reasons could gain greater independence thanks to driverless cars.
Should we be concerned that robots are going to take our jobs? What are the ethical implications of an increased reliance of robots in every day life? Who is ultimately responsible if something goes wrong with a driverless car; the passenger, the programmer or the injured party?
This is your chance to listen to a lively discussion on the subject with a panel of experts made up of:
- The Right Honourable Viscount Ridley – author, science journalist and Honorary President of Life.
- Prof Alan Winfield – co-founder of Bristol Robotics Laboratory and believed to be the only Professor of Robot Ethics in the world.
- Dr Sabine Hauert – Assistant Professor in robotics at the University of Bristol, where her research focusses on designing robotic swarms.
- Naeem Soomro – Director of Robotics for the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Consultant Urologist at the Freeman Hospital and Professor of Urology at Newcastle University, and is engaged with government organisations on the ethics of robotics and working to produce a regulatory framework for wider adoption of robotic surgery in the UK.
- Claire Fox – Director and founder of the Academy of Ideas.
