Where to Shop for Back to School Essentials in Newcastle

Visit these venues for all your back to school essentials in Newcastle

Last updated:

Freshly sharpened pencils, crisp new notebooks, and the neatest uniforms imaginable can only mean one thing… it’s back to school season!

And to save you the shopping stress, we’ve rounded up the top venues to get all the essentials ahead of September. It’s a gold star guide, if we say so ourselves.

Shopping for uniforms & clothes

Next, Eldon Square

Having recently received a stellar revamp in Eldon Square, newly reopened Next has a School Shop for the ages! Selling everything from shorts and skirts, to trousers and tights, there’s everything you’ll need to kit out the whole family here. Plus, there’s a teen range for the older kids, and a handy clothing size guide so you’ll know exactly what to grab when you head in store.

Primark, Northumberland Street

If the kids are Marvel mad, or go daft for Disney, then a trip to Primark should definitely be on the cards ahead of September. As well as plenty of branded bags, lunch accessories, and stationery, Primark also offers an impressive range of uniform basics to explore, plus outerwear picks for the playground.

Marks & Spencer, Northumberland Street

Stress-busting uniforms are the priority for M&S this Summer, stocking intuitively designed clothes to help lessen the morning madness. Think crease-resistant, stain-resistant and water-repellent pieces that’ll see them through playtime to home time – so you can focus on the stuff that really matters.

TK Maxx, Northumberland Street

TK Maxx might not necessarily be the first place you think of when it comes to school uniforms, but the Northumberland Street store is a veritable treasure trove for parents! Whether they need a new coat to keep them warm in the playground, or just another pair of socks (let’s be honest, you can never really have enough), you’ll find it here.

John Lewis, Eldon Square

Unsurprisingly, John Lewis are on it when back to school season rolls around. You’ll be hard pressed to not find what you’re looking for in their school uniform shop, offering everything up to and including sixth form outfits and sportswear. Check out their handy dandy schoolwear buying guide if you’re wondering where to start!

Shopping for shoes

Deichmann, Northumberland Street

Deichmann have got every school year, from toddlers to teens, covered with their impressive range of footwear. Plus, they’re running a mega buy one, get one half price offer, so you can stock up on spares before the school year is in full swing. You'll be feeling like sole-mates with Deichmann in no time!

Clarks, Eldon Square

Some of us will still remember the annual family trip out for a shoe fitting at Clarks – rest assured that those days are not over! Rather than picking up your paper place in the queue though, did you know that you can now book a fitting in advance? And with Clarks offering their lowest prices since 2019, it’d be daft not to check out their new range!

Shoezone, Clayton Street

Whether the kids need some playground-proof trainers, or simply some comfy classroom kicks, Shoezone’s wide back to school range is sure to have something for everyone. And with plenty of affordable prices on offer, they’re definitely proof that you don’t need to stretch the budget for good quality.

Office, Eldon Square

Durable and on-trend, Office should definitely be on your back to school shopping list if you’ve got a fashion-forward family! Of course, there’s their own Office label to explore, but there’s plenty of big-name brands to explore in-store too, including everyone from adidas and Nike, to New Balance and Converse.

Charles Clinkard, Eldon Square

Not only does Charles Clinkard offer an impressive range of kicks for kids, but there’s loads of handy guides to read up on their website before heading in-store. Covering everything from the pros and cons of fitted vs non-fitted shoes, the features and benefits of Charles Clinkard shoes, why not take a read before booking an in-store fitting appointment?

Skechers, Eldon Square

From light-up designs to slip-in styles, Skechers keeps the bairns comfortable and the envy of their pals with plenty of choice in their back to school range. Check out their machine washable options to help make home-times a little easier too!

Schuh, Eldon Square
And last, but by no means least, Schuh can help the young’uns step out in style this September with their huge back to school offers. Think casual classics for the classroom, and big-name brands like Kickers, Lelli Kelly, GEOX and Dr. Martens too. Phew, talk about being spoilt for choice!

Shopping for stationery & more

WHSmith, Northumberland Street

From calculators to compasses, it’s worth stopping in at WHSmith (or TGJones) as part of your back to school shop, for those more easily forgotten bits and pieces! But if you’re struggling to jog your memory of what you used to carry around the classroom, fret not – there’s a handy essentials checklist to help keep the shopping simple.

The Works, Eldon Square

Meanwhile over in Eldon Square, The Works offers plenty of cheery and colourful stationery that the kids will love. There’s all the basics you’d expect of course, but plenty of nice-to-haves too, like educational guides, books and play sets to keep young minds mulling over outside the playground.

Typo, Eldon Square

One for the older kids now, as we take a trip to Typo! From backpacks and bags, to planners and pencil cases, their back to school range is the perfect balance of pretty and practical that even the parents can’t disagree with. We won’t blame you for browsing the aisles here all day long, to be honest…

Poundland, Clayton Street

Let’s get real – things are going to get lost throughout the school year. And no matter how many times you might put their name on the pencil case, it inevitably winds up missing. So this year, why not make sure you’ve got some backup with a trip to Poundland, and grab some basics from their back to school offer to tide the kids over with until the pencil case makes its grand return.

Miniso, Eldon Square

Home of all things cute, cuddly and collectable, Miniso is the ideal spot for treating your young masterminds to something adorable ahead of September! From Sanrio to Disney, there’s sure to be something to put a smile on their face.

Ryman, Eldon Square

Dictionaries, thesaurus, revision guides, storage devices… Ryman’s range of stationery goes on and on! Grab your shopping list and head here for pretty much every essential you can think of – and maybe a few you haven’t.

Søstrene Grene, Eldon Square

Søstrene Grene is getting “ready, set, study” with their super aesthetic back to school range. Think weekly planners, pens, and pencils – plus travel mugs and totes to make the school run just that little bit nicer. And hey, you can even reward yourselves for getting it all done with a sweet treat from their in-store sweet shop before the checkout!

Waterstones, Monument Mall

If study guides are on the radar ahead of September, then definitely head to Waterstones to take a look at their study guides to help the clever-clogs build some essential foundation knowledge. Their huge collection of books definitely gets an A+ from us, as does their selection of bookish stationery.

So whether you’ve make the shopping list already, or you’re only just getting started, we wish you the best of luck (and plenty of coffee breaks!) for your back to school shopping this August.
