Our monthly events wrap-up returns for September

Regardless of whether we’re get another heatwave, or the autumn weather finally kicks in – there’s a veritable feast of fun to be had in Newcastle this September!
Take a journey through Wylam Brewery (a.k.a. Middle Earth) as The Lord of the Wings returns to Toon, laugh the night away at Northern Stage’s Comedy Gala, or get those muscles in gear for the Dragon Boat Race down on the Quayside… excellent events are in abundance this month, so make sure you don’t miss a moment and get these dates in your diary!

Our beloved Dragon Boat race is back for another adrenaline-fueled adventure down the Tyne! This year, we’ll be raising money for The Great North Children’s Hospital Foundation, supporting their life-changing research, and their valuable projects that help make hospitals more welcoming for children and their families. Grab a boat for your team if you fancy taking on the challenge – or enjoy the competition on dry land, with plenty of fun activities to enjoy throughout the day.

Northern Stage Comedy Gala @ Northern Stage
In the mood for something a little lighter this September? Then you’ll want to pay a visit to Northern Stage for their Comedy Gala! Hosted by the fabulous Nicola Mantalios, you’ll enjoy some top-notch laughs from the likes of Sophie Duker (Taskmaster; Live at the Apollo), Desiree Burch (Taskmaster; Would I Lie to You?), Dan Tiernan (British Comedian of the Year 2022), Joby Mageean, and Lauren Stone (Sean Lock Comedy Award nominee).

War Horse @ Theatre Royal
The National Theatre’s incredible acclaimed production of War Horse gallops onto the Theatre Royal stage this September, as part of a brand-new UK and Ireland tour for 2025. Michael Morpurgo’s iconic novel comes to life with phenomenal life-sized horses made by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, as the characters journey from the fields of rural Devon to the trenches of First World War France. Poignant and powerful, it’s a production that promises to stay with you well after the curtains fall.

Newcastle Jazz Festival @ Live Theatre
Do ya like jazz? Well you’re in luck, since Newcastle Jazz Festival is returning for its sixth edition this month! Over at Live Theatre, you’ll have the chance to hear from some incredibly talented performers, including London-based guitarist Ant Law and his Unified Theories Quartet, the Noel Dennis Trio, and the Joe Steele Quartet. Sounds like it’ll be hitting all the right notes!

The Lord of the Wings @ Wylam Brewery
Wylam Brewery doesn’t cluck about when it comes to their Food Battles, and this month is no exception! This time around, foodies are invited to take on an epic adventure with The Lord of the Wings – celebrating all things wing and wing-inspired – in a quest to find the one true ring. Er, we mean wing. Vegan, veggie, or just a fussy eater? Don’t sweat it, there’ll be plenty of options available for you too. And with DJs keeping the party going well into the night, The Lord of the Wings is proof that you don’t have to go all the way to Mordor for a good time.

The Stand Kids Comedy Club @ The Stand
Following the success of last year’s Big Family Christmas Show, Elaine Robertson and Lee Kyle return to The Stand stage this September with the Kids Comedy Club. Expect plenty of hilarious, chaotic fun for all the family throughout the afternoon. And who knows, you might even have a stand-up star in the making…

Tom Grennan @ Utilita Arena
With an lengthy list of accolades already under his belt – including an MTV Award for Best UK Act, two number one albums, multiple Brit and Ivor Novello nominations – Tom Grennan is back on the road this year with a brand-new tour and lucky for us, it’s coming to Newcastle! Expect to hear hits like Little Bit of Love, as well as tunes from the recently released album Everywhere I Went Led Me to Where I Didn’t Want to Be.

Billy Eliot 25th Anniversary Q&A @ Tyneside Cinema
This September marks the 25th anniversary of the iconic film Billy Eliot, and to celebrate Tyneside Cinema are welcoming a jam-packed cast of guests for an extra special Q&A. Screenwriter Lee Hall, producer Jon Finn, and co-chair of Working Title Films Eric Fellner will be on the hotseat for this panel, hosted by Dr. James Leggott (Associate Professor at Northumbria School of Design, Arts and Creative Industries), who also just happens to be the author of the new BFI Film Classics book celebrating Billy Eliot. Phew, talk about talent!

The Lionesses Roar: An Evening with Christine Knox and Aran Embleton @ The Lit & Phil
Following the incredible recent success of The Lionesses, The Lit & Phil welcomes two brilliant Geordie England football stars, Christine Knox and Aran Embleton, to discuss the history of women in the sport, and how they fought against hardships and prejudices to play the game they love. It’ll be hosted by co-producer of the hit play Wor Bella Jane Harker, and there’ll even be the opportunity to ask your own burning questions too.
