Everything You Need to Know About: NE1’s Stay & Play
All the key details you’ll need to know when NE1’s Stay & Play zone returns to Newcastle this July
If you stopped by Newcastle’s Old Eldon Square last summer, you probably noticed our new kid-friendly play zone Stay & Play.
We’re happy to report that Stay & Play is returning to Old Eldon Square this summer for its second edition, with a new partner that’s set to make the zone even more fun with a range of new additions. Read on for all the details you’ll need to make the most of this fun, free and family-friendly installation this summer.
What is NE1’s Stay & Play?
Stay & Play is a fun-filled outdoor play zone that made its debut in 2025 and is making a welcome return in summer 2026. Featuring interactive games, sandpits and activities for kids of all ages to enjoy, it’s ideal for summertime family fun in Newcastle city centre.
This year, we’re happy to announce that we’re partnering with bus operator Stagecoach and adding a range of bus and transport-themed installations to the area too!
Where is NE1’s Stay & Play located?
It’s located at Old Eldon Square just next to NE1’s Screen on the Green and NE1’s Tiny Toon.
If you’re travelling into Newcastle via public transport, Monument Metro Station and the Eldon Square Bus Station are just a short walk away.
How long will it be at Old Eldon Square?
Stay & Play officially opens on Monday 20th July and will be in place at Old Eldon Square throughout the school summer holiday until Monday 31st August.
It's open from 10am to 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 9:30am 'til 5pm on Tuesdays (opening half an hour earlier for Screen on the Green's Toddler Takeovers) and from 9am to 4:30pm on Sundays when it opens an hour earlier for quiet sessions until 10am for visitors who prefer a slower and more relaxed environment.
What can I expect to find at NE1’s Stay & Play?
Alongside the interactive games, sandpits and activities that were in place at Stay & Play last year, the zone will also feature a number of games, activities and experiences themed around bus transport and inspired by our partners Stagecoach.
Stagecoach will also be hosting free events and activities in the Stay & Play zone throughout the summer with giveaways and even more transport themed fun.
How much does it cost to enter NE1’s Stay & Play zone?
You’ll be happy to know that Stay & Play is completely free to attend, alongside Screen on the Green and Tiny Toon – ideal for keeping little ones entertained over the summer holiday without breaking the bank!
Is there anything else I need to know about NE1’s Stay & Play?
There are a few things to take note of if you’re planning a trip to Stay & Play. Due to its popularity last year, we’re expecting a high volume of visitors and will be operating a one family-in, one-family out policy so please be aware that there may be a slight wait before entry and get there early if you can!
Last entry into the Stay & Play zone is 30 minutes before closing and children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. And, lastly, as Stay & Play is an outdoor installation, there may be times when it has to close unexpectedly due to adverse weather conditions – but here’s hoping for a warm and sunny summer!
There you have it; everything you need to know for when NE1’s Stay & Play returns to the city centre this July. And with free films at Screen on the Green and even more play-filled fun at Tiny Toon too, what better excuse to bring the whole family to Newcastle's Old Eldon Square this summer?
