It’s almost Halloween - Goth Christmas, the most macabre time of the year! It’s not clear when Halloween in the UK transformed from wholesome activities like bobbing for apples to serial killer hockey masks and blood-spattered nurses costumes but it’s now a big deal and lots of us go all in.

There are plenty of excellent Halloween events on or around the big night this year in Newcastle, and we’ve rounded up a few of them to sate your lust for blood (or lurid cocktails in test tubes anyway).

Newcastle Castle Halloween Tours Newcastle Castle Halloween Tours

Halloween Evening Tours @ Newcastle Castle

Newcastle Castle is one of the oldest buildings in the city and regularly gets cited as being one of the most haunted too, so what better place to get in the Halloween mood? They’re running some spooky 90-minute walking tours of the Castle Keep, letting you explore the halls and passages of this ominous edifice! You’ll hear macabre tales of old, get a view of the city from the keep’s roof and some refreshments!

31st October, £15

Halloween Spooktacular Halloween Spooktacular

Halloween Spooktackular @ Boulevard

The Boulevard never does anything by halves and that includes Halloween. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday till Halloween, the drag stars – Danni Dee, Miss Rory – and their Broadway Dancers will be bringing you their usual blend of camp hilarity with some added spookiness, climaxing with a very special production on the 30th and 31st. Book by phone for its final two shows or any Sunday show and you'll get a 50% discount too!

Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout October, from £10

Bongo's Bingo Halloween Bongo's Bingo Halloween

Bongo’s Bingo Halloween Special @ Boiler Shop

The Bongo’s Bingo phenomenon shows no sign of quitting and of course they’re going hard on Halloween this year.  There’s bingo of course, but also appropriately spooky music, themed prizes, singalongs, cash prizes and a fancy dress competition (top points for coming as your ex!). So gather together something suitably macabre to wear and don’t forget your dobber!

26th-28th October, from £13

Tyneside Halloween All-Nighter Tyneside Halloween All-Nighter

Halloween All-Nighter @ Tyneside Cinema

Most of our ideas about Halloween come from movies – from horror movies, of course - so a cinema is the natural habitat of any real Halloween buff and as ever, Tyneside Cinema has got the gory goods. Once again, they’ve got four themed screens running all night showing the Evil Dead series, slasher sequels, alien horrors and a mystery selection - we’re talking The Thing, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers, Army Of Darkness! All this plus a quiz, suitably spooky music and a fancy dress competition. It’s £25 for the whole night although you can  book individual films too.

28th October, £25

Halloween Ghost Walks Halloween Ghost Walks

Halloween Ghost Walk @ Newcastle City Centre

Newcastle Ghost Walks have been leading people through the darkest, most dreadful corners of the city for 15 years and really know the spookiest spots and the most awful alleys. They’re pulling out all the stops for Halloween – from 27th October to 1st November their paranormal investigator will show you the sights and you even get to join in a real séance at Newcastle Castle’s Black Gate Pits!

27th October - 1st November, £9.99

Creeper Creeper

Creeper Halloween Party & DJ Set @ Hard Rock Café

The Hard Rock Café is hosting a Halloween Special, with a special DJ set from goth-rock outfit Creeper (supported by Rise DJs who’ll get things started!). There’ll be a fancy dress costume of course, and plenty of candy and competitions, Halloween-themed snacks and cocktails and more to make your evening as thrilling as it is chilling!

Bottomless Halloween Lunch @ Bar + Block

Newgate Street steakhouse Bar + Block are celebrating spooky season with a suitably Halloween-themed bottomless lunch available from 26th to 31st October between 12pm and 5pm. Priced at £36 per person, the lunch includes two tasty courses from its lunch and early dinner menu plus all the bottomless prosecco, beer or non-alcoholic drinks you can guzzle in two hours. There's the option to upgrade to a third course (for an extra £2) or bottomless spooktacular cocktails (for an extra £5) too!

Rocky Horror Picture Show Rocky Horror Picture Show

Rocky Horror Quiz Night @ No28

The Rocky Horror Picture show is camp, salacious, gloriously perverse and a whole lotta fun that's full of fantastic costumes and classic songs - Halloween in a nutshell, basically. But how well do you know it? No 28 is dedicating its monthly quiz night to the classic seventies movie – message them on Facebook to book in your team and show them you know your Magenta from your Columbia!

30th October, £2

Pup Up Cafe Pup Up Cafe

Pup Up Café Halloween Special @ Revolution

Let’s be honest, dogs are largely indifferent to Halloween – it’s definitely more a cat thing, evil as they are. But if you love dogs and you love Halloween, then the Pup Up Café taking over Revolution is just for you. On 22nd October, owners of dachshunds, doodles and pugs can join dozens of other pugs and pug-lovers for an afternoon of spooky goings on, including photo ops, a dog (trick or) treat on arrival and special puppuccinos!

22nd October, from £9.50

Murder In The Malibu Mansion Murder In The Malibu Mansion

Murder in the Malibu Mansion Barbie Brunch @ Slug & Lettuce

If you head to the Slug & Lettuce on 28th October (from 10am to 6pm) you can join in all the fun with the Murder In The Malibu Mansion Barbie Brunch, an event which seems to have fitted about three zeitgeisty themes into one action-packed day! There’ll be excellent brunch dishes (including pancakes of course) and themed cocktails, and the DJs are bringing the KENergy all day. All you need to do is think up a Halloween Barbie / Ken costume and get involved!

28th October, from £33

Hed Kandi Hed Kandi

Hed Kandi: A Twisted Disco @ Colonel Porter’s

Colonel Porter’s has quite a Halloween vibe already – vintage décor and bric-a-brac abounds – and is the perfect place for a visit from the legendary Hed Kandi team, Ibiza party legends with an international reach and a reputation for doing parties right! This latest Sunday session will have Kandi residents Mark Doyle, Marc Rowell and Mark Ireland playing classic house while you dress up, party hard and get fake blood all over each other!

That's just a few suggestions for things to do for Halloween, whether you fancy house classics as you totter around dressed as Morticia or just want to sit surrounded by pugs in pumpkin costumes. Anything beats sitting at home being harassed by unruly kids in half-hearted costumes who just want your candy, right?
